Employee assistance program
The Employee assistance program is available to all staff and is voluntary. Staff may be made aware of or encouraged to use the program but can’t be directed to participate.
The program is strictly confidential. Your name will not be disclosed to anyone at the University at any time.
Assistance can be provided for a variety of personal, emotional or work related problems including:
- Anxiety, depression and general emotional problems
- Work related difficulties
- Marital or family problems
- Alcohol and drug related problems
- Stress
- Financial and legal worries
- Interpersonal conflict
- Grief and trauma
- Sleeping difficulties
Many of the clinicians are trained and qualified in gender inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. Please enquire with the individual providers if this is something that needs to be considered as part of your EAP sessions.
All personal treatment information remains with the external service provider and no information will be disclosed unless the person being treated authorises them to do so in writing.
The Employee assistance program is self-referring. You select one of the participating psychologists and make an appointment with their office directly.
The University will pay for three sessions per year. If more sessions are needed, your psychologist can request approval for an extra two sessions from the Flinders Work Health and Safety unit.
Where the psychologist suggests long term counselling or specialist advice, a referral for you will be made and you will be responsible for the ongoing cost.
Assistance of this kind is most effective when used early in the identification and resolution of problems before they affect personal wellbeing and work performance.
How do I use the program?
- Choose a psychologist and make an appointment with them or their office directly
- Tell them that you are a Flinders University staff member and that the University will pay for up to three sessions as part of the EAP
- Tell them your broad area of employment, that is if you work in professional portfolios or in a college
You may choose any one of the following providers in the table below for your counselling sessions.
Further information on a confidential basis is available from the Return to Work Coordinator/Senior WHS Advisor, Karen Hayden, (08) 8201 3117 or email whs@flinders.edu.au.

PsychMed are happy to offer EAP services to individuals in rural and remote locations who cannot access a physical office location. These services mirror the in-person services with regard to the number of sessions and practitioners who will be providing treatment. Where they differ is the modality, whereby PsychMed offer these services through video link or over the telephone. Video services are provided through Zoom, which is an encrypted peer-to-peer software to ensure client privacy is maintained.
