The Student Learning Support Service is here to help you get a head-start in kicking those academic goals. The week before semester starts is the perfect time to get your head around how to manage your time and balance your new university life, assignments and grades and the key skills you'll need to study with success.
Join us live on campus at Bedford Park in O'Week for our first round of introductory sessions:
Welcome to your new student life at Flinders. Your student life can require significant changes to the lifestyle you were used to. It is a good idea to understand the factors you will likely need to juggle so that you can do well in your studies and at the same time, not stress over other demands (such as work and family commitments, social life, and self-independence).
This session helps you to think about these other demands to start off the right way and plan ahead. As Benjamin Franklin said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”. Knowing and understanding uni life and its impact on other life considerations and vice versa can help you build a plan to have a more positive and pleasant university experience.

Being in a new university is exciting. It’s like stepping into a new world with a completely new culture. You probably already know that you will have assignments and projects to complete but how do you deal with these? And how do exams work at Flinders? Are they like school homework and exams or are they very different?
This session explores the world of assignments and grades at university. You will learn what acronyms and terms such as GPA, WIL, HD, census date, and many others mean. You will get a better idea about the typical types of assignments you may be asked to complete and how to start these assignments. You will learn about lecturers’ typical expectations of university assignments and grades. This is important so that you know exactly what you need to do and aim for. Do not miss this very important first step in your university life.

In this session, we identify the skills you will need and show you how to improve these skills to do well. We will reveal what is expected of an excellent assignment submission. We will put you in your lecturers’ shoes and show you what they look for when grading an assignment. We will then show you the steps you should consider and take throughout the assignment process from start to final submission.
