Continuing to Not Meet Academic Requirements keyboard_arrow_up

If you have failed a topic more than once and/or failed 50% or more units of the total attempted units for the course for a second time in your studies, you will move to the progression status of ‘Continuing to Not Meet Academic Requirements’.

With this status, an initial evaluation of your progress will be conducted by your College to assess whether you need to have a formal review of your progress through the College Progress Committee or not.

How will we communicate with you?

You will receive an email from the College to inform you whether you will have your progress considered by the College Progress Committee or not.

If you will not have a formal review of progress by the College Progress Committee, you will be allowed to continue with either your current study plans, or with some amended study plans. This will be outlined to you in the email.

For students who are assessed and will have a formal review of your progress, find out what this means for you.

What do you need to do?

It is really important that you engage with the University and this process if you are allowed to continue with either your current study plans, or with some amended study plans.

You need to consider why you are at this stage of progression and what this means for your studies. Please also consider the support services available to you, especially accessing the support of a Student Success and Wellbeing Advisor or speaking to your Course Coordinator.

How can we support you?

There are many support services available ranging from academic support to non-academic support. Please see the full list of support services to see what might be applicable to you. We also have a team of Student Success and Wellbeing Advisors if you are not sure where to turn to. Accessing their support can be found here.

Academic support can also range from speaking to a Topic or Course Coordinator through to building your academic skills.

You may also want to consider non-academic support through Health and Counselling or through other wellbeing initiatives. These can be found here.

International Student Support – If you are an international student, you have the following support options available to you here.

Your Ongoing Progress Journey

If it is determined that you do need to have a formal review through the College Progress Committee, you will move to the Formal Review stage.

student-progress-continuing-to-not-meet-ar-to-formal-review.png
Formal Review keyboard_arrow_up

If you have been evaluated as having met the ‘Continuing to Not Meet Academic Requirements’ criteria and the College has determined a Formal Review of Progress is needed via the College Progress Committee, you will reach the Formal Review stage.

With this status, you will be contacted by your College with all the details necessary regarding the process.

How will we communicate with you?

You will receive an email from the College outlining:

  • Reasons for initiating the review
  • Process and deadline for submitting a written response
  • Guidance on what information may be included in the response
  • Support services available to you
  • Possible outcomes and the consequences of not responding
  • Academic Advocacy options

You will also receive contact from the Course Coordinator (or delegate) who will also speak to you about the issues you are facing and any ways to mitigate these issues. The Course Coordinator will also be part of the College Progress Committee.

After the College Progress Committee has met and determined an outcome in accordance with the Student Progress Policy (3.6.b), the College will notify you of the outcome on behalf of the Dean Education.

What do you need to do?

It is vital that you engage with the University at this stage through engaging with the Course Coordinator (or delegate) when they contact you, providing information that is relevant to the process including any reasons that have impacted on your progression journey and how you will address the progress issues to date, and responding to the requirements in the timeframe outlined to you.

The University wants you to be successful in your studies, and you can still meet the academic requirements through engaging with this process.

How can we support you?

It is critical to be engaged with this stage of the process as the University is still looking to support you to complete your studies. However, there are also some other crucial support mechanisms at this time together with the usual support options from the support directory.

Your health and wellbeing is very important at this stage, and therefore you might want to consider Health Services options or also the Counselling Services provided by the University.

There are also academic advocacy options available to you with the Flinders University Student Association (FUSA) which is free, independent and confidential. FUSA can help you understand University policies and systems together with options available to you.

International Student Support – If you are an international student, you have the following support options available to you here.

Indigenous Student Support – Support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are offered by Yungkurrinthi Student Engagement.

Your Ongoing Progress Journey

There are outcomes from the College Progress Committee that range from no further action to very prescribed actions regarding your studies, including the possibility of stopping your studies.

The outcome letter from the College Progress Committee will be clear on what is required from you. This is also a time you might like to consider further academic advocacy.

Also if you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the College Progress Committee, you can request a review in accordance with the Student Review and Appeal Policy and procedures, noting there are time deadlines with this process.

Study Leave keyboard_arrow_up

Most domestic students can take leave for one semester per academic year from their degree without a formal application. Please refer to the exceptions below:

  • Undergraduate nursing students must apply for any period of leave including one semester.
  • Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students must consult the HDR degree management page to arrange intermission. Scholarship holders will also need to consider their Conditions of Award.

Study leave greater than one semester

Students requesting greater than a semester of leave (i.e. one academic year of leave) must apply. You can do this by submitting an Ask Flinders support request specifying the time period and a brief reason.

If your leave is approved, you must withdraw from enrolled topics for that semester, or you may incur fees and an academic record. See enrolling in & withdrawing from topics for instructions.

Study leave greater than one semester without an application or approval

If you do not apply for leave, you will be recorded as Absent Without Leave (AWOL) for that course. You can request readmission to the course via Ask Flinders however approval is subject to each College.

In most cases, postgraduate students can only be readmitted to full-fee paying places, therefore readmission to a Commonwealth supported place requires a new SATAC application. Please contact Ask Flinders to confirm your eligibility for readmission.

If you want to speak to someone about your options, please contact your Enrolment and Course Advisor for your College.

Refunds, Special Consideration and or Fee Remission keyboard_arrow_up

If you pay your topic fees and subsequently withdraw from the topics you have paid for, you may be eligible for a refund of student contribution amounts or tuition fees.

When you withdraw from a topic is critical. You can find out all the key enrolment and withdrawal dates regarding a topic here.

For refund conditions, domestic students should refer to the Fee Refund and Remission Procedures.

International students should refer to the International Student Tuition Fees Procedures.

Special Circumstances keyboard_arrow_up

Sometimes there are special circumstances that mean you need to withdraw from a topic and you can apply for a remission of fees. Circumstances may include, but are not limited to, medical, family/personal, employment or course related.

An application will be approved where it can be established that you had special circumstances that:

  • were beyond your control; and
  • did not make their full impact on you until on or after the census date of the topic(s); and
  • made it impracticable for you to complete the requirements of the topic(s) in the semester that you undertook them.

All applications, regardless of the circumstances, must have independent documentation confirming the dates when the circumstances occurred, changed or worsened as well as how the circumstances impacted your ability to complete your studies. The University has no obligation to follow up with you for additional documentation.

Find further details and how you apply here.

Academic Advocacy keyboard_arrow_up

Academic Advocacy is available to any student seeking free and confidential advice on issues affecting their studies. Our advocacy officers can support students with advice related to student progress notifications, grade remark requests, academic integrity allegations, placement concerns and fee remission, as well as helping students know their rights and options under University policy.
