Flinders provides key communication activities, touch points and support interventions across the semester that help you navigate your requirements within a course, support your wellbeing and help you to succeed.
Flinders takes a multifaceted approach to ensuring you have the right information at the right time. This is through various communication channels and information strategies such as:
This high-level overview outlines these activities within a semester, and it is especially important to note ‘census date’ - the last day on which you can withdraw from topics without incurring your student contribution amounts (for Commonwealth supported student), tuition fees (for fee-paying student) and student services and amenities fees.
For HDR students, there is an additional high-level overview of communication and support for HDR students throughout your candidature.
It is important that you monitor your Flinders University email account regularly, and you can forward your Flinders University emails to another email address.
A Topic Coordinator will reach out if you are not engaging in your topic in the early weeks of teaching.
The University will also contact you if you are not engaging with your studies, particularly prior to Census Date which is the last day a student can withdraw from topics without incurring student contribution amounts (for Commonwealth Supported students), tuition fees (for Fee-paying students) and Student Services and Amenities fees. If you withdraw from a topic by this date, it will not appear on your academic transcript.
Flinders University has some additional resources to help you understand your assignments and grades:
For HDR students, engagement in credit-based topics is managed as above, and for time-based thesis topics, your progression is managed by annual Milestones. More information is available here.

If you are planning a change to your study plans, please check with your respective College Enrolment and Course Advisor
For HDR students please refer to the Degree Management website for all information about ways to manage your candidature, this includes:
HDR Scholarship holders will also need to consider their Conditions of Award for any variations to candidature.
Domestic students can enrol in a reduced number of topics noting this will impact on the duration of time to complete your degree, and you will also need to consider:
International students need to maintain a full-time study load to meet the requirements of your visa.
Please contact your College Enrolment and Course Advisor for further advice
Most domestic students can take leave for one semester per academic year from their degree without a formal application. Please refer to the exceptions below:
Students requesting greater than a semester of leave (i.e. one academic year of leave) must apply. You can do this by submitting an Ask Flinders support request specifying the time period and a brief reason.
If your leave is approved, you must withdraw from enrolled topics for that semester, or you may incur fees and an academic record. See enrolling in & withdrawing from topics for instructions.
If you do not apply for leave, you will be recorded as Absent Without Leave (AWOL) for that course. You can request readmission to the course via Ask Flinders however approval is subject to each College.
In most cases, postgraduate students can only be readmitted to full-fee paying places, therefore readmission to a Commonwealth supported place requires a new SATAC application. Please contact Ask Flinders to confirm your eligibility for readmission.
If you want to speak to someone about your options, please contact your Enrolment and Course Advisor for your College.
If you pay your topic fees and subsequently withdraw from the topics you have paid for, you may be eligible for a refund of student contribution amounts or tuition fees.
When you withdraw from a topic is critical. You can find out all the key enrolment and withdrawal dates regarding a topic here.
For refund conditions, domestic students should refer to the Fee Refund and Remission Procedures.
International students should refer to the International Student Tuition Fees Procedures.
Sometimes there are special circumstances that mean you need to withdraw from a topic and you can apply for a remission of fees. Circumstances may include, but are not limited to, medical, family/personal, employment or course related.
An application will be approved where it can be established that you had special circumstances that:
All applications, regardless of the circumstances, must have independent documentation confirming the dates when the circumstances occurred, changed or worsened as well as how the circumstances impacted your ability to complete your studies. The University has no obligation to follow up with you for additional documentation.
Find further details and how you apply here.
