Induction and training are an important part of the University’s system to ensure the health and safety of staff, students and others in the workplace. The University has a range of online and other training programmes.

Managers and supervisors must identify the health and safety competencies (see Training required for Work Health and Safety) required for each position reporting to them, and determine the WHS training required (see Training Needs Analysis) by workers under their supervision to meet those competencies.

WHS Inductions for New Staff keyboard_arrow_up

All staff are required to undertake general and site/work specific WHS Induction.

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that new staff receive this induction on their first day at work.

Induction checklist

New staff members must complete the WHS induction checklist (click the download button below).  The WHS induction checklist must also be completed when working at a new site or location / building (i.e. has moved buildings or sites).

WHS induction checklist (DOCX | PDF)

Once the WHS induction checklist has been completed, please lodge a ServiceOne request where the checklist will need to be attached and sent to your supervisor for sign off.  The checklist must be completed and sent via the ServiceOne process by the person whose name is on the form.

Online induction

New staff casuals - must also complete the new staff induction online program

New full time, permanent and fixed term need to use the button below for the online orientation (which is normally emailed by the Staff learning Portal).

The online WHS for Managers and Supervisors course is assigned automatically by the Staff Learning Portal (full time, permanent and fixed term supervisors / managers).  If the manager / supervisor is outside of these categories then, they must complete the on-line training for supervisors through Canvas.

Online orientation for new staff

The course contains mandatory content for all new staff at Flinders University as well as links to additional information and resources, including further mandatory training.

Please note, if you are a contractor, see information for contractor inductions.

All students must receive information about emergency procedures. This is normally done by staff showing the evacuation video at the first classes of the Semester.

The video is available in each lecture theatre. Contact the IDS help desk #12345 option 1 for technical assistance. If a copy of the relevant video is not available see the WHS emergency evacuation videos.

Information about emergency procedures is also emailed to all students at the start of each semester and is posted on the student portal.

Visitor induction keyboard_arrow_up

Staff who are hosting visitors to the campus must inform those visitors  about emergency procedures.

Event organizers must make information about safety available to anyone attending events on University premises. This could be through having the information in the conference/event pack (if applicable) or by reading out the statement at the start of the event.

  • Event safety statement

Where a person is under competent supervision while visiting an area of low risk, an induction may not be required. However, in areas where there is inherent risk (eg laboratories, workshops, plant rooms) an appropriate induction is required.

Emergency control personnel keyboard_arrow_up

All emergency control personnel are required to undertake training as specified in the University's Emergency Control Procedures.
