Get enrolled

Now it's time to request your enrolment (thesis only students) or enrol in topics and register for classes (coursework students).

Step 1: Prepare to be enrolled

Just prior to your Start Date, the HDR Admissions Team will manually admit you into your course, enrol you into your thesis topic and email you an Enrolment Verification with details of your candidature.

Step 2: Order your ID card

Once you have completed your enrolment, you can organise your Student ID card. You’ll need your ID to:

  • attend exams
  • obtain student concessions
  • access University buildings
  • borrow resources from the library
  • store credit for printing and photocopying
  • and more.

Order your Student ID card the day after you complete your enrolment. You will see a link under the My Systems section on Compass.

Contact Flinders Connect if you have any issues.

Please note: if you are an international student who has commenced study offshore, you will need to wait until you have arrived in Australia to collect your ID card.

Step 3: Prepare for your research

Contact your supervisor and plan your first meeting

At this meeting you and your supervisor/s should negotiate the expectations of supervision for your candidature, such as regularity of meetings, project structure, work submission guidelines, including types of feedback. You can discuss the college's expectations and HDR milestones, especially the Confirmation of Candidature.

Your supervisors will provide academic support, ensuring your thesis is planned properly and written to expected standards. They’ll also help you adhere to Flinders University’s milestone and thesis submission timeframes.

Meet college administrative staff

The college is responsible for providing you with resources for your candidature. Arrange to meet the college's administrative staff to gain access to additional resources that maybe available for you. They will assist you to settle in after you meet with your supervisor. The HDR college contacts will be able to help you with your enquiries.

Contact laboratory staff (if relevant)

If your research involves working in a laboratory, ensure that you meet with the relevant college laboratory staff and participate in college/laboratory WHS inductions.

Step 1: Enrol in topics

Master of Clinical Education by Research and Master of Health and Clinical Research students will be emailed an Admission Confirmation and can then self-enrol.

Tip: Have your course rule and study planner with you when you go to enrol.

To enrol:

  • Log in to the Student System and select the ‘My Enrolment’ tab
  • Choose the course you would like to enrol in
  • Click on the link to the enrolment declaration, read the enrolment declaration, accept the terms and conditions and click ‘Agree’
  • Scroll down to see the topics available for your course.

Topics will appear with a blue background if they are available for enrolment. Some will have a preselected semester if they are only offered in a singular study period or location. Other topics may have their own drop-down menu where you need to select a study period or location.

To select the topics you wish to enrol in, tick the corresponding box on the right-hand side of the page and follow the prompts to finalise your enrolment. Once you have enrolled, you can register in classes (if applicable).

Watch our 'enrolling in topics' video for step-by-step guide to enrolling in topics at Flinders.

Having trouble enrolling in topics? See our troubleshooting section.

Key dates

It's important to be aware of the following key enrolment dates:

  • Enrolment and class registration schedule
  • Critical enrolment dates

Enrolling in topics

Step 2: Register for classes

You’ll be able to register in classes once you’ve enrolled in topics. Class registration is done via the 'My Timetable' tab of the Student System.

It's important to register in classes as soon as possible, to help secure the university timetable that works best for you.

View instructions on registering in classes. You can change your enrolment up to the enrolment deadline. Watch the video for a step-by-step guide to registering for classes at Flinders.

If your class is full, or your classes clash, see the troubleshooting section below for information about what to do.

*Once you have completed the enrolment and class registration process, please allow up to an hour to view your timetable on Compass (your timetable will show immediately in the Student System).

Online students: Online topics without scheduled classes will not appear on your timetable in the Student System. Check the requirements of online topics on Flinders Leaning Online (FLO) or Canvas. See step 3 below for more information.

Registering for classes

Step 3: View your topic materials

Your topics deliver a range of materials through Flinders Learning Online (FLO). You can access each of your topic FLO sites via the 'my course' section of Compass.

Access to enrolled topics in FLO is made available to you one week before teaching begins. You can view the teaching dates via the topic page - access this via the Topic link in the 'my course' section of Compass.

Each FLO topic page will include information specific to your topic. This includes:

  • assignment guidelines – called Statements of Assessment Methods (SAMs)
  • assignment submissions
  • lecture recordings
  • quizzes
  • forums
  • assignment grades and feedback (final topic grades will be available to view via Compass, following the relevant topic results date)

The appearance of your topics may vary, however your Topic Coordinator and FLO Student Support are able to assist. You can view your Topic Coordinator details via the 'my course' section of Compass.

Enrolment and class registration troubleshooting

I am unable to tick the ‘enrol’ box or can’t find a particular topic keyboard_arrow_up

If you are not able to tick the ‘enrol’ box or can’t find a particular topic, please try the following:

  • Ensure you have accepted your offer and completed the pre-enrolment prompts.
  • Check the topic is being offered in the relevant year, by clicking on the Additional Information link under the topic or visit the university timetable.
  • Check that enrolment is open by visiting the enrolment and class registration schedule.
  • Check that you meet the prerequisite requirements by clicking on the Requisite Information link under the topic or on the topic information page. If you believe you have grounds to request a prerequisite waiver, submit an Ask Flinders support request.
  • Check if the topic requires topic coordinator approval or manual enrolment by clicking on the Additional Information link under the topic or on the topic information page. Submit an Ask Flinders support request if you have not obtained topic coordinator approval.
  • Clear any filters (except for the year) you may have entered toward the top of the My Enrolment page.

For further assistance, submit an Ask Flinders support request. Please include a description of the problem and screenshots where possible.

I have a timetable clash for two of my enrolled topics keyboard_arrow_up

Please note that attendance at some classes forms part of the assessment for the topic. In the event that you have selected topics that have clashing class times, the Student System will allow you to 'clash' classes, ie register in two classes at the same time for different topics.

It is your responsibility to ensure you meet the attendance requirements for your topics. This may require you to attend a repeat lecture, or if the lecture is recorded, watch or listen to the lecture at a later stage (recordings will be made available on FLO for some topics). To check whether your lecture will be recorded, contact your lecturer or topic coordinator. If the lecture will not be recorded, you will need to contact email your College administrative officer to discuss your options.

The only class I can attend is full. Can I get special consideration to attend? keyboard_arrow_up

You may apply for Special Consideration when the only class(es) you can attend are unavailable to you (due to being full). Students who can attend at alternative times need not apply.

To apply, please submit an online support request via Ask Flinders. Your request will need to include the:

  • Topic code
  • Topic name
  • Activity (eg, Tutorial)
  • Details of requested class (eg, Tuesday at 10 am)

You must also include one of the following reasons for requesting Special Consideration with your request:

  • Clash between core topic classes
  • Part time student (9 units or less)
  • Elite athletes registered with Flinders University
  • Medical/disability

An application will not guarantee you a place in your requested class.

Why can't I register in classes for my enrolled topics yet? keyboard_arrow_up

It may be that they are not open for enrolments yet. Check the enrolment opening times for your topics via the enrolment and class registration schedule.
