Acting on your higher degree by research offer

Congratulations on receiving an offer to study at Flinders University.

It is important you follow the steps outlined in your offer letter to secure your place in your course.

Before you accept, decline or request to defer

You will need:

  • Your offer letter

Please ensure that you make a selection in the drop down above with what type of student you are to see the steps below.

Your Student ID and FAN

Your Student ID and Flinders Authentication Name (FAN) give you access to a range of information and systems while you’re at Flinders.

Step 1: Review your offer

Now that you have received and read your offer of admission to a higher degree by research, you will need to follow the steps below to accept, decline or defer your offer. It is important to read your offer letter as it contains important information about how to accept your offer and may include a deadline to secure your place in your course.

  • If your offer contains special conditions, please review the HDR special conditions.
  • If you need to change your start date to within the same semester as your offer (ie Jan-Jun or Jul-Dec), immediately notify HDR.Admissions@flinders.edu.au  before accepting your offer, otherwise the date cannot be changed.

Step 2: Accept your offer 

Defer your offer 

Decline your offer 

Step 2: Accept your offer

If you are happy with your offer and once you have met any offer conditions, you are required to Accept or request to Defer by a deadline as stated in your offer letter to secure a place in the course. Receiving an offer does not secure your place with Flinders.

To formally accept your offer, you need to:

  1. Log in to the Student System.
  2. Select the ‘My Offers’ tab.
  3. Click on the ‘View/Respond to my Offer’ link on the left hand menu.
  4. The ‘My Applications’ window will display all offers awaiting a response.
  5. Click on ‘Respond’ for the offer you wish to accept

Step 3: Enable multi-factor authentication

After you have accepted your offer (following the steps outlined above), you are required to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your mobile device to increase the security of your Flinders’ account.

We strongly recommend you set up MFA on multiple devices, so you also have a backup if you don't have your mobile device on you, or in emergencies such as a lost or broken device.

Follow the link below to enable MFA on multiple devices and for answers to frequently asked questions.

Enable MFA

*Note if you do not do this step now, you will be prompted to do this next time you go to log in to a Flinders University system.

Step 1: Review Your offer

If your offer contains special conditions, please review the HDR special conditions before you act on your offer.

Step 2: Accept your offer 

Defer your offer 

Decline your offer 

Step 2: Accept your offer

If you are happy with your offer and once you have met any offer conditions, you are required to Accept, or request to Defer your offer by the deadline stated in your offer letter, to secure a place in the course. Receiving an offer does not secure your place with Flinders.

To accept your Offer of Admission, you need to indicate this through our International Application System. Please ensure you upload your signed acceptance form indicating the start date agreed with your supervisor, along with any other documents requested as part of your offer. Failure to attach all of the relevant information may result in a delay in processing your acceptance.

If you applied through an education agent, please liaise with them to complete this step

The Flinders International Admissions team will review these documents and advise of any further required documentation.

Step 3: Pay your deposit

Your initial payment is due once you have accepted your Offer of Admission. You will be redirected to the Western Union Payment Gateway once you accept your offer in our International Application System. Your Offer of Admission will contain details regarding how much your initial payment will be.

Some courses may require you to pay your deposit by a deadline. This information will be confirmed in your offer letter.

At this time, you must also pay your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) visa. If you are pre-arranging your own OSHC, please ensure you provide evidence to us as soon as possible.

After you have made your initial payment, remaining payments must be made by the topic due date. Students are charged per topic, based on their enrolment.

Step 4: Activate your FAN

Once your payment has been processed, we will issue you with a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Once you have received this, you will be able to activate your FAN (Flinders username) to start accessing University systems and services.

Your FAN is unique to you. Your FAN and password give you access to IT services, like email, the Student System and Flinders WiFi.

Step 5: Enable multi-factor authentication

After you have activated your FAN, you are required to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your mobile device to increase the security of your Flinders’ account.

We strongly recommend you set up MFA on multiple devices, so you also have a backup if you don't have your mobile device on you, or in emergencies such as a lost or broken device.

I've accepted my offer. What is next?

There are steps you need to take before starting the enrolment process, to ensure it all runs smoothly

Provide your details

Apply to defer your offer

If you receive an offer to Flinders but you do not wish to commence studying straight away, you can request to have your offer deferred to a start date in the next semester (half-year intake) or subsequent semester (half-year intake).

Flinders can hold your place in a deferrable course for as long as two consecutive years.

To secure a place in the course, you must respond by the deadline stated in your offer letter.

If you simply wish to change the start date on your offer letter to earlier or later in the same semester (half-year intake), email HDR.Admissions@flinders.edu.au nominating your new start date. Do not formally apply to defer.

To formally apply to defer your offer, you need to:

  1. Discuss with your supervisor first, to confirm you have their approval to delay the project start date: It is good to have evidence of their approval in writing.
  2. Log in to the Student System.
  3. Select the ‘My Offers’ tab.
  4. Click on the ‘View/Respond to my Offer’ link on the left-hand menu.
  5. The ‘My Applications’ window will display all offers awaiting a response.
  6. Click on ‘Respond’ for the offer you wish to Defer

Your request to defer will be considered and you will be advised of the outcome by email.

Decline your offer
