Program Title:
Community Nutrition Elective in Indonesia – anaemia, malnutrition and iodine deficiency disorders
Program Location:
University of Gadjah Mada, Jogjakarta, Indonesia
Program Overview:
Students spend three weeks hosted by the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia, participating in an elective course on Community Nutrition. The syllabus comprises a range of learning activities designed to expose students to the Indonesian health care system, and to common nutritional public health problems in Indonesia, including paediatric malnutrition, iodine deficiency disorders and anaemia. These are nutritional problems rarely seen in Australia, and this is a unique opportunity for students to experience assessment and management of these conditions first-hand. The syllabus includes lots of field visits to local hospitals, Puskesmas (village health centres), a therapeutic feeding centre, villages and an iodine deficiency research centre. Students will be ‘buddied’ with local Indonesian Nutrition students and complete projects with the community. Students will also receive culture and language training before they leave from Ms Dian who is from UGM completing a PhD here.
