Program Title: Building cross-cultural communication and research skills in Timor-Leste

Program Location: Dili Timor-Leste (East Timor)

Program Overview: This Project aims to develop graduate skills with a specific focus on cross-cultural communication and research skills. Students will be paired with local Timorese students and immersed in local student life. It combines a two-week intensive field experience in Timor-Leste with inter-disciplinary learning at the students’ home institution to develop:

  • Students’ academic and practical understanding of development issues facing Timor-Leste and;   
  • Graduate skills for functioning effectively in a globalised environment.

Program Dates: July 6—20 2019

Places Available: 9 places funded by the New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant (NCP).

Open to:

Students must have a space in their study plan to enrol in INTR3104 Global Workplace in Semester 1 2019.

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • be Australian Citizens
  • be enrolled in an Australian University at the time of application and throughout their overseas study program; and
  • be undertaking a Bachelor's degree level program (Pass or Honours) at the commencement of the program; and
  • have successfully completed at least 72 units of the undergraduate course with a grade point average of at least 5.0 at the commencement of overseas study; and
  • be between 18 and 28 years of age or over 28 on a case by case basis at the commencement of the overseas study; and
  • have their overseas study count as credit towards their course of study at Flinders University, and will need to be able to enrol in INTR3104 in S1 2019

  • Portions of the program will be held in a regional area of Timor-Leste, and students will need to be able to exercise appropriate responsibility and cultural awareness

Credit: On the completion of the required assessment items, students will receive credit towards the topic INTR3104, which will count towards their degree or major sequence (as appropriate).

Costs: A total of 9 New Colombo Plan Mobility grants of $3,000 are available to support eligible participants.  This grant will cover return airfare (Adelaide-Dili-Adelaide) and is likely to cover part of the accommodation costs.

The NCP grant is unlikely to cover items such as passports, visa, immunisations, meals, local transport, and other sundry and personal expenses.  Participants should expect that they will need funds additional to the NCP Mobility Grant, either through the OS Help Loan, if eligible, or at their own expense.

A limited number of places will be available for applicants who are not eligible for the NCP grant, who are able to self-fund.

Students are eligible to register with Flinders travel insurance.

Interested applicants are required to submit an Expression of Interest to Katherine.sutcliffe@flinders.edu.au by 5pm Tuesday 30 April 2019(extended from 15 February).

  1. Your name, student number, the course you are currently enrolled in and GPA
  2. A one-page statement addressing why you are interested in this program.
