Welcome to your Higher Doctorate.
The Higher Doctorate is the highest qualification awarded by Flinders University. This is your opportunity to present for examination, your substantial body of published work that demonstrates a significant advance in knowledge in your field, produced since the conferral of your doctoral qualification.
The information on this page is provided to support you towards preparing and submitting your thesis for examination, and the final steps after examination.
Your Higher Doctorate is an online degree which will take 3-6 months full-time to complete. Under the guidance of your Principal Supervisor, you will write a contextual statement and prepare your body of work in the format required for thesis submission. Please refer to your Enrolment Verification for specific details of your candidature.
Please refer to Section 2 of the Higher Doctorate Submission Rules for details of the thesis, which will require you to prepare front matter, a contextual statement and the body of work.
The contextual statement is the over-arching statement that commences the higher doctorate thesis. It is crucial to the success of the doctorate. It maintains many functions.
Firstly, it must connect the publications being assessed by examiners, showing their relationship, and the arc of knowledge they convey: the contextual statement presents the ‘story’ of your research.
Secondly, it must confirm the candidate’s authorship and role in the construction of this research, with attention to methodology, ontology and epistemology.
Thirdly and most importantly, the contextual statement confirms the contribution to knowledge, the discipline or the field of research.
Therefore, the contextual statement must demonstrate influence, impact, engagement and esteem in the international scholarly community, and for other stakeholders. Answering the following question may help a candidate frame their statement: What do we know now that we did not know before the publication of your research? To make this case, metrics can be deployed or more qualitative confirmations about impact, engagement and esteem as part of the prose of the contextual statement. More importantly, the candidate must show the scholarly debate emerging from their research and / or the change in international practice in a profession or field.
Noting the requirements of the contextual statement – and its pivotal role in the success of the higher doctorate – the length varies from between 10,000 words to 40,000 words in English. It must show the relationship between the scholarly outputs and then demonstrate how they are linked to create influence, impact, engagement and / or esteem. These variables cannot be assumed. The case must be made in the contextual statement.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the format of the thesis meets the requirements of the Higher Doctorate Submission Rules.
