Deferring your offer
Applies to new students who may wish to defer commencing their course for up to two years after their receiving their offer.
Leave of absence
Applies to students who have commenced their course and wish to take a year off from their studies.
New domestic undergraduate students who do not wish to commence studying straight away, may be eligible to have their offer deferred for a full calendar year of study at a time. Flinders can hold their place in a deferrable course for as long as two consecutive years. See flinders.du.au/defer for details.
If you are a continuing domestic student and wish to take time off from study, you may be required to apply for a formally recorded leave of absence.
Most domestic students can take leave for one semester per academic year from their degree without a formal application. Please refer to the exceptions below:
Students requesting one academic year of leave must apply by submitting an Ask Flinders support request specifying the time period and a brief reason. If your leave is approved, you must withdraw from enrolled topics for that semester, or you may incur fees and an academic record. See enrolling in & withdrawing from topics for instructions.
If you do not apply for leave, you will be recorded as Absent Without Leave (AWOL) for that course. You can request readmission to the course via Ask Flinders however approval is subject to each College. In most cases, postgraduate students can only be readmitted to full-fee paying places, therefore readmission to a Commonwealth supported place requires a new SATAC application. Please contact Ask Flinders to confirm your eligibility for readmission.
If you have taken leave and wish to return to study early, please submit an Ask Flinders support request before the census date of the relevant semester.
Current domestic undergraduate students who are considering changing course can apply to transfer to most other undergraduate courses via the Student System. This includes students who would like to commence an additional degree in an approved combined degree program. Please visit the internal transfer page for further information about which courses Flinders University offers via internal transfer and how to apply.
Postgraduate students are required to submit a new SATAC application to change course.
Newly commencing international students who are unable to start their course may defer their offer to future semesters. To defer your offer, please email intladmissions@flinders.edu.au.
International students who wish to take time off from their studies must have compassionate or compelling grounds to be granted leave from study. Students wishing to make an application must contact the International Compliance team in writing by emailing internationalcompliance@flinders.edu.au. See the international students webpage for further information.
International students should contact intladmissions@flinders.edu.au for assistance with changing their course.
