Sustainable Tourism Development Malaysia Program

This immersive, two-week experience in Malaysia offers students interdisciplinary workshops designed to build knowledge and raise awareness of environmental and social challenges in Southeast Asia. Participants will explore diverse urban and remote settings, including Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Kota Bharu, and Royal Belum State Park. Workshops will cover topics such as conservation and biodiversity protection, cultural heritage and community engagement, adventure tourism (including kayaking and hiking), and sustainable development.

Eligibility	Actively enrolled Flinders student in Tourism & Events (or a similar program) and have completed 72 units of study. Must be deemed suitable to represent Flinders University overseas.
Language of instruction	English
Credit (Academic Recognition)	Eligible for 4.5 units of credit towards your academic program. Must enrol in TOUR3108. Upon successful completion, students should receive 4.5 units of credit.
GPA	4.5 or above

Financial Support

Travel Scholarships Available

The program is supported by the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan (NCP). For eligible students, the cost program can offset by:

Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program Scholarship AUD $3,500 per student.
RA Simpson International Scholarship AUD $500 (subject to meeting eligibility requirements).
OS-HELP up to AUD $9,504 (conditions apply).

If you are an international student, permanent resident or do not meet the eligibility for an NCP Grant, you may still participate and be offered an RA Simpson Scholarship AUD $500 (conditions apply). If you are a Post-Graduate, commonwealth-supported student, you are eligible to apply for OS-HELP up to AUD $9,504 (conditions apply).

Finances

Program Costs (Indicative)

The program cost is AUD $1,550 which includes a non-refundable deposit of AUD $250. The cost for Australian undergraduate citizens can be offset by an AUD $2,000 New Colombo Plan grant and OS-HELP up to $9,504 (conditions apply).

The cost will cover:

Academic support and mentorship for the 2-week program
Accommodation (twin share)
Select dinners and celebratory events
Regular organised events, trips, and activities throughout the program

The cost will not include:

Return and internal flights – Approx. cost AUD $1265
Visa (if applicable)
Vaccinations/medical arrangements (consult your medical professional prior to departure)
Independent trips, shopping, and other meals

*Note that these costs can be offset with a New Colombo Plan grant – as detailed below – if an applicant is successful in securing a grant.

Flinders University reserves the right to alter the program cost at any time due to currency fluctuations and/or fee changes made by its partners.

All students participating in this program will be covered by the university’s travel insurance. Please note, this cover is limited. It is advised that you read the Flinders University Travel and Insurance schedule of benefits before you go, know what is covered and what is not covered.

Students without TOUR3108 in their study plan should submit an online enquiry via Ask Flinders (click “Request Support”) and have their study plan checked by the College before applying. Include the following question in your enquiry:

Do I have a 4.5 unit topic (TOUR3108) available that will allow me to participate in the NCP program titled “Sustainable Tourism Development Malaysia”?
