Cultural experiences in a coastal city in South China

My course Outbound Study Abroad Programs and Partners Cultural experiences in a coastal city in South China

Outbound Study Abroad

    Overview Programs and Partners Costs and Financial Aid Information for Parents Apply for an Exchange Semester Apply for a Short-Term Program Apply for the New Colombo Plan Scholarship Program

Program Title:

Environmental investigation and cultural experience in a coastal city in South China

Program Location:

Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province. China

Program Overview:

This NCP project will support students to participate in a project-based study at Guangdong Ocean University (GDOU). The program is designed to enhance the cultural link and teaching and research collaboration between Flinders and GDOU. The host university is in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province. Zhanjiang is a coastal city with a population slightly larger than Adelaide. The city has rich geological, hydrological, meteorological, ecological, historical and cultural features, for students to explore and experience. These projects will form the major part of ENVS3702 for students in BSc (Environmental Science) and relevant degree programs. Projects provided to students will include:

  • Environmental and eco-physiological comparison of mangrove ecosystems in Adelaide and Zhanjiang;
  • Volcanic and geothermal activities and features in Zhanjiang;
  • Weather and forecast practicums;
  • Hydrology of a maar lake in the Huguangyan national geological park, in addition to one-week language and cultural activities.

Earth and environmental features in Zhanjiang provide teaching resources in geology, hydrology, meteorology, and ecology and are complementary to what is offered at Flinders. Also, weather forecast practicums in GOU and Bureau of Meteorology, fill the gap in topics not currently offered at Flinders. Gum tree plantation and management in Zhanjiang provides students an opportunity to gain knowledge about gum trees outside Australia.

Students from both universities will be paired and co-supervised by academic members from each university.

Program Dates:

5 June – 10 July 2019

Places Available:

16 funded places with the New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant
