Oceans Research also offer multi-disciplinary practical and theoretical training for aspiring researchers from internship to postgraduate levels in conjunction with partner schools, technical colleges, and universities.
Oceans Research's Marine Biology Field Course enables students, scientists, and conservationists to learn and apply new skills in marine biology through hands-on experience. The internship is interdisciplinary ranging from biological to socio-economic studies of marine and terrestrial resource use in southern Africa’s coastal society. Activities that will be undertaken during the internship include: introduction to bioacoustics and how to analyse sounds, trophic and movement ecology of sharks and marine mammals, biodiversity assessment methods (e.g., baited cameras, transects, distance sampling, snorkelling, drone, fishing tag and release, surveys of plastic pollution), marine mammal stranding response workshop, science communication course. Throughout the internship, students will also learn seamanship (how to be on a boat, what to do in different situations, how to read bathymetry to safe anchor in coastal waters, knots, etc), ethical fishing for research, and how to maintain research boats and scientific equipment.
