Program Location: Inner Mongolia, China
Program Dates: 14th June - 11th July, 2025
Application Deadline: March 7th, 2025
Places Available: up to 12 New Colombo Plan (NCP) funded places valued at $4200
In this New Colombo Program (NCP) project, we will undertake four-week environmental investigation training in the temperate steppes of the Mongolian Plateau. The project focuses specifically on the assessment and monitoring of grassland areas. Grasslands are significant ecosystems, playing an important role in the carbon cycle, erosion control, climate mitigation and for the economies of rural communities (such as for cattle grazing). The Mongolian Plateau provides a fascinating case study for Australian students. Strong parallels can be drawn between environmental problems faced by the region and our home environment: climate variability, severe droughts, and damaging floods. However, students will also gain invaluable insights into differing agricultural and environmental management practices. Students will have the unique opportunity to work directly with scientists and students from the host organisation, Institute of Water Resources for Pastoral Area (IWHR), in Inner Mongolia, China. The trip also provides opportunities to visit a few universities in Beijing and Hohhot.
