    Overview Vice-Chancellor's Award for Doctoral Thesis Excellence Best Higher Degree by Research Student Publication DocFest 2020 Seminar Series

Guidelines for Best Higher Degree by Research Student Publication 

Research is the foundation for innovation, but research in and of itself is only the first step. Dissemination is key. This award recognises the best of our research higher degree students and their transformative scholarship.

This annual programme demonstrates Flinders University's commitment to high quality research dissemination. We celebrate the Best HDR Student Publications through these awards.

The Best HDR Student Publication is an initiative of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

Awards will be made to students selected by each College. The value of each award will be $1,000.

 

Guidelines for Best HDR Student Publication

Eligibility

The first author of the publication must be a Flinders University student, who has not previously won the Award, and who meets the following conditions:

  1. The student must currently be enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research at Flinders University.
  2. The publication must be published in the current year or year before, and must have Flinders University as the author’s affiliation
  3. Peer reviewed journal articles, refereed conference papers, book chapters only (not reviews) and books will be accepted.
  4. The student must only submit one publication for an award each year. .
Procedure

1.       Students should submit one publication to their Dean (Research):

  • Business, Government and Law: Professor Adela McMurray CBGL.research@flinders.edu.au
  • Education, Psychology and Social Work:  Professor Raj Shekhawat CEPSW.research@flinders.edu.au
  • Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences:  Professor Sharyn Roach Anleu CHASS.research@flinders.edu.au
  • Medicine and Public Health: Professor Damien Keating (Interim) CMPH.research@flinders.edu.au
  • Nursing and Health Sciences: Professor Raymond Chan CNHS.research@flinders.edu.au
  • Science and Engineering: Professor Claire Lenehan CSE.research@flinders.edu.au

2.       Each College will establish its own internal deadline for submissions.

3.       Each submitted publication will be reviewed according to a general review process (judging criteria below).

4.       Each College will select its winners.

5.       Winners will be submitted by the College to the Dean of Graduate Research via email to hdr.progression@flinders.edu.au on or before 5pm on 8 December 2023.

6.       The Dean of Graduate Research will award the ‘Best HDR Student Publication’ at an appropriate celebration. 

Submission

Applicants should submit the following for review by the College:

  1. Copy of the publication
  2. Month the research output was published.
  3. A justification of why the publication is important.
  4. Number of citations.
  5. Impact Factor of the journal or refereed conference paper.
  6. Ranking of the journal in their field.
  7. For multi-authored publications, the relative contribution of each of the authors to the publication (% for the following components: research design; data collection and analysis; and writing and editing.)
  8. A letter of support from the Supervisor that includes additional evidence about the importance of the publication specific to the field of study.
Judging criteria
  1. Does the publication make a significant original contribution to the field of study?
  2. Are methodology, research, evidence, and conclusions used appropriately and described clearly?
  3. Is the writing of high quality and the publication well presented?
  4. Is the publication in a quality journal, book or equivalent?
Awards
  • Each award is to the value of $1,000, payable to the student via electronic funds transfer.

  • One award will be available to the Colleges of:
    • Nursing and Health Sciences,
    • Education, Psychology and Social Work
    • Business, Government and Law
    • Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences
  • Two awards to the Colleges of:
    • Science and Engineering
    • Medicine and Public Health
    • (This ratio is proportional to the numbers of HDR students in these two colleges).
