    Overview Vice-Chancellor's Award for Doctoral Thesis Excellence Best Higher Degree by Research Student Publication DocFest 2020 Seminar Series

Guidelines for Best Higher Degree by Research Student Publication 

Research is the foundation for innovation, but research in and of itself is only the first step. Dissemination is key. This award recognises the best of our research higher degree students and their transformative scholarship.

This annual programme demonstrates Flinders University's commitment to high quality research dissemination. We celebrate the Best HDR Student Publications through these awards.

The Best HDR Student Publication is an initiative of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

Awards will be made to students selected by each College. The value of each award will be $1,000.

 

Guidelines for Best HDR Student Publication

Must be a HDR student of Flinders University with an enrolment status of Enrolled, Leave of Absence or Under Examination as at the date the call for submissions is sent out.

• The publication must be based on research conducted during, and be a part of, the HDR program.

• The Applicant must be the first (or sole) author of the publication.

• The publication must have Flinders University as the Applicant’s affiliation.

• The student must have a valid ORCiD ID (if you don’t have an ORCiD ID read more here and please register here.)

Students should submit one publication to their Dean (Research):

  • Business, Government and Law: Professor Adela McMurray

  • Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences: Professor Sharyn Roach Anleu
  • Medicine and Public Health: Professor Billie Bonevski
  • Nursing and Health Sciences: Professor Rebecca Golley
  • Science and Engineering: Professor Claire Lenehan

• Each College will establish its own internal deadline for submissions.

• Each submitted publication will be reviewed according to a general review process (judging criteria below).

• Each College will select its winner(s).

• Winners will be submitted by the College to the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research (Training and Capabilities) and Dean of Graduate Research via email to hdr.progression@flinders.edu.au on or before 5pm on 6 December 2024.

• The Pro Vice-Chancellor Research (Training and Capabilities) and Dean of Graduate Research will award the ‘Best HDR Student Publication’ at an appropriate celebration.

Publication Criteria:

• The publication must be a peer-reviewed journal article (in a Q1 journal), a refereed conference paper, a refereed book chapter (not book reviews), or an authored refereed book. In fields of research where there are no Q1 journals, the College will be required to demonstrate why the journal is equivalent to Q1. This will be provided as a separate statement and not be counted towards the application word count

• The publication must have been published on or after the 1st January of the year preceding the year the award is applied for, and prior to the date of application for the award.

Submission Requirements:

• A copy of the publication.

• A brief summary (strictly no more than 250 words) highlighting the significance and impact of the research presented in the publication.

• A brief statement of recommendation on the publication (strictly no more than 250 words) from the principal supervisor. Applications that exceed the word limit will be ruled ineligible, without exception.

• A completed Publication Summary Table (please refer to the guideline document and use the appropriate table for your application).

  • Prestige: The prestige and quality of the publication and the outlet.
  • Impact: Contribution to the field and potential real-world applications.
