Student support & services Planning for academic success Supporting Student Progress and Success (SSPS)
grads_mock_v3-04.png

To support you with your academic success, Flinders offers a range of resources and opportunities to help address any issues affecting you.

Our academic intervention strategies are there to support you on your academic journey, and it is strongly recommended you engage with the process or there may be consequences for your course.

Supporting Student Progress and Success (SSPS)

You will be identified for the SSPS program if you are having difficulty progressing in your course in accordance to below criteria:

Criteria keyboard_arrow_up

If you are enrolled in a course at the University, excluding Higher Degree by Research students and;

  • failed the same topic more than once, or
  • fail 50% or more units of the total attempted units for the course, or
  • are unable to meet any professional registration or accreditation requirements and/or inherent requirements of the course. This includes being unable to complete a placement in accordance with the Work Integrated Learning Policy, or
  • fail to meet any other progression criteria determined by the authorised delegate.
What counts? keyboard_arrow_up

All topics which you were enrolled in at the topic census date will count towards the assessment of SSPS.

If your grade is incomplete (*) for topics you are enrolled in at the time of the SSPS assessment, this topic will not be included in the SSPS calculation. If you have an incomplete grade at the time of SSPS assessment, and  it changes to a fail grade, this will count toward SSPS at the next SSPS assessment.

Difficulty progressing – early identification

If you are identified as having difficulty progressing, Flinders will offer resources to address the factors impacting your progress, and provide support to improve your academic performance, in accordance with the Student Progress Policy and Student Progress Procedures.

  • meet the criteria outlined in Early identification for any two or more study periods during your course; or
  • Fail to meet the conditions of a restricted study plan or any related performance requirements.
What this means keyboard_arrow_up

If you are identified as experiencing ongoing/escalating difficulty progressing, you will be initially evaluated in accordance with the Student Progress Policy and Student Progress Procedures and may be subject to a formal review of your progress.

What to expect keyboard_arrow_up

Flinders will contact you via your Flinders University email account to offer support and help you implement strategies to improve your academic performance.

Formal review of progress

Flinders will contact you if your academic progress is identified for formal review in accordance with the Student Progress Policy and Student Progress Procedures. It is essential you engage with this process, otherwise there will be serious implications to your studies.

What this means keyboard_arrow_up

Flinders will notify you in writing via your Flinders email address if you are subject to a formal review of progress by the College Progress Committee via your Flinders University email account. The written notice will include:

  • the reasons for initiating a formal review,
  • the process and deadline for submitting a written response,
  • guidance on what information may be included in your response,
  • the support services available,
  • the possible outcomes and consequences of not responding.

Regardless of the College Progress Committee’s decision, you have the opportunity to respond and/ or appeal the decision. Student Assist, offered by FUSA, can help you understand the process.

What to expect keyboard_arrow_up

You need to provide a written response to the College, including any relevant academic or personal information to support your application to continue in your course. If you do not respond, the College will make a determination without your input. Possible outcomes include the following:

  • allowing you to continue with your studies,
  • allowing you to continue with your studies, but with conditions,
  • required to defer your enrolment for up to a year,
  • precluded from re-enrolling in your course and any course in the preclusion group for up to five years, with or without conditions for re-enrolling,
  • recommended to terminate your enrolment in the course and be precluded from enrolling in any course in the course preclusion group, or
