If your current student visa is due to expire and you intend to extend your course, you will be required to apply for a student visa (subclass 500) online. It is your responsibility to check information on student visas via the Department of Home Affairs' website. The following are some guidelines only.
It is very important that you are aware of your visa expiry date and that you apply for a new visa before your current visa expires. You can check the expiry date on your Visa Grant Letter or via the Department of Home Affairs’ Visa Entitlement Verification (VEVO) System.
We recommend that you start collecting the relevant documents and making required appointments for the visa renewal at least 4-6 weeks before your current visa expires.
To find out which documents you might need to provide with your student visa application, click on the Documents Checklist Tool:
Select the relevant information for the fields “Country of Passport”, “Education Provider” (Flinders University) or “Education Provider CRICOS code” and “I am one of the following…” and then click on “Display Evidence”. The Documentary Evidence List will appear – prepare documents as required.
Apply for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) if required. Please read the information below on how to apply for a CoE renewal.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are an Australia Awards Scholarship holder OR postgraduate research student who needs to stay here for interactive marking, please contact International Student Services (firstname.lastname@example.org) to discuss your situation.
Renew your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) if necessary. You will need OSHC coverage for the duration of your visa, so please include additional 2-3 months for your OSHC from the end date of your CoE.
Contact the Medibank Private representative located at Flinders Connect to renew your Medibank OSHC or join Medibank.
If you are an Allianz OSHC policy holder, contact the Allianz representative located at Flinders Connect or visit ALLIANZ. If you are a BUPA OSHC policy holder, please ring 1800 888 942, email email@example.com or visit one of their retail stores.
You might need to undergo Health Examinations. Before lodging a visa application, please complete My Health Declarations to find out which health examinations are required. To organise a health assessment, please visit Arranging a Health Examination. In Australia, book your appointment with Bupa Medical Visa Services or ring 1300 794 919.
PLEASE NOTE: Your visa medicals are not covered under OSHC.
||Depending on your “Documentary Evidence List” created by the Document Checklist Tool you might need to provide evidence of your English language skills. If you need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency, there is a minimum English language test score. You might also be exempt from providing evidence.
||Depending on your “Documentary Evidence List” created by the Document Checklist Tool you might need to provide evidence of your financial capacity. You will be able to demonstrate this by: evidence of funds to cover travel to Australia and 12 months’ living, course and (for school aged dependants) schooling costs for the student and accompanying family members; OR evidence that you meet the annual income requirement OR a letter of support from DFAT (Australia Awards Scholarship Holders). You must have genuine access to funds.
Please remember: It is important to comply with your student visa conditions at all times.
How to apply for a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) extension
All students (except Australia Awards scholarship holders) on a student visa are required to maintain a valid, up-to-date and current CoE at all times.
Flinders staff will not be able to issue a CoE on the spot and a CoE extension is not automatic. It is your responsibility to apply for a CoE extension.
Under Standard 8 of the National Code, international students are required to complete their course within the expected duration. The University can extend the CoE to enable the student to extend their student visa ONLY under the following exceptional situations where it is clear (with proper supporting documentation) that the student will not complete the course as a result of:
- compassionate or compelling circumstances; or
- the University implementing its intervention strategy for students who are at risk of unsatisfactory academic progress; or
- an approved Leave of Absence
If you have any of the above situation and need assistance, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please note, if you have deliberately under-enrolled, you may not be issued a new CoE.
- Have you received all of your results for your currently enrolled topics on the Student Information System? If not, this may delay the processing of your CoE. Please wait until all results are available before making a request for your CoE extension.
- Please make sure you get your study plan updated and approved from your course coordinator or responsible staff at your College. You need an approved study plan to apply for a CoE extension.
- Please enrol for next semester topic(s) as per your approved study plan.
If you require a CoE extension, please follow the steps as below:
- Click on “Request Support”
- Complete the online form
- In the AREA choose “Student visa/CoE”
- In “Details” explain why you need the CoE extension and please include from which country (Australia or your home country) you will apply for your student visa renewal
- Attach your current “approved study plan”
- Click on “Submit”
Once you have lodged your CoE extension request including all required documentation and completed all required actions, your CoE will be issued within 3-5 working days and an electronic copy of your CoE will be sent to your Flinders email account.
