Creative component

For students whose research project has a creative component, please review this information.

Ethics approval required

Confirm with your principal supervisor if any human ethics, animal ethics or biosafety compliance approvals are required for the project. It is the responsibility of the researcher to ensure that all necessary reporting requirements associated with an approval are met.

Ethics approved

Your principal supervisor advises that the project has human ethics, animal ethics or biosafety approval. Please discuss this with them.

Fieldwork expected

Fieldwork is anticipated in your research project. Before you commence fieldwork, you and your principal supervisor must:

  • Review Student Travel Insurance and email riskandinsurance@flinders.edu.au if you have any questions relating to cover for an insurance assessment.
  • Utilise the Field Trip Guidelines and process for undertaking research off-site.
  • Complete an application for external status if your fieldwork is for longer than three months.
Human ethics approval required

You must work with your principal supervisor to obtain final ethics approval before commencing any “research conducted with or about people, or their data or tissue”.

Industry Internship

Please consult your supervisor and the HDR Development team to confirm the details of your Industry Internship of at least 3 months that will take place within the first 18 months of your candidature.

Intellectual Property assignment

Your supervisor has indicated you will be required to sign an agreement assigning your intellectual property rights to the University or a relevant third party (an ‘Intellectual Property Assignment Deed’), and/or a confidentiality agreement, prior to starting your research project.

This is because your project:

  • is subject to an agreement or activity involving the University and a third party e.g. industry placement or externally funded scholarship or research activity, or where confidentiality of the project is required;
  • has, or is likely to have, clear potential for commercial exploitation;
  • is likely to result in IP which is jointly created by your supervisor or other University staff or academic status holders;
  • builds upon pre-existing University-owned IP; and/ or
  • involves the creation of teaching materials for future use by the University

By now:

  • Your supervisor will have discussed this matter with you. If this has not occurred, please contact your supervisor immediately.
  • You will have read the University’s Intellectual Property Policy and Student Research IP Procedures.

Next step:

  • Review the information on the Office of Graduate Research Intellectual Property assignment webpage.
  • Consider accessing free legal advice through Flinders University Student Association (FUSA), Flinders Legal Centre, UniSA Legal Advice Clinic, University of Adelaide Law School Free Legal Clinics, or access legal advice from any other source you prefer. Neither the University nor your supervisor can provide advice to you about your rights regarding assignment.
  • You will be invited to attend an Intellectual Property meeting prior to commencing your research for the purpose of facilitating the assignment of your intellectual property rights to the University and/or signing a confidentiality agreement. Your supervisor will submit a request for this meeting and a deed will be prepared and sent to you.
  • You are not obliged to enter into such a written agreement before you have been given a reasonable period to review, seek external advice and discuss such agreements. This is normally at least two weeks.

If you have any questions about this matter, please contact gradresearch@flinders.edu.au.

Observing a topic

Please review your offer to confirm if you are required to observe any topics.

What is observing a topic?

Observing a topic allows you to attend lectures for a particular topic. Observing a topic does not include attendance at tutorials or laboratory classes. Observing a topic does not award a participation certificate and cannot be counted as credit towards a topic in an award course at the University.

How do I apply?

  1. Review your letter of offer for topics to be observed and view the topic information website for topic offerings, timetable information and College details.
  2. Download and complete the Application for Observing Topics form available here. Ensure that you have signed Topic Coordinator approval.
  3. Email your approved form to askflinders@flinders.edu.au
Online Plus status

Please review the resourcing agreement for HDR Online Plus candidature attached with your offer to confirm the agreed arrangements.

Overseas fieldwork expected

Overseas fieldwork is anticipated in your research project. Before you commence overseas fieldwork, you and your principal supervisor must:

  • Review Student Travel Insurance and email riskandinsurance@flinders.edu.au if you have any questions relating to cover for an insurance assessment.
  • Utilise the Field Trip Guidelines and process for undertaking research off-site.
  • Complete an application for external status if your fieldwork is for longer than three months.
