A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Modern Greek by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

A student may complete a minor sequence of 18 units in Modern Greek by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units) and two Year 2 topics (9 units) from the Language topics listed in the program of study below.

A minor in Modern Greek is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Education (Primary), Bachelor of Arts from 1 January 2019.

The minor sequence is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Teaching (Primary) from 1 January 2020.

Course aims

The Modern Greek major aims to:

  • foster the development of proficient levels of linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competencies
  • expose students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to linguistic and cultural knowledges and practices (grammar, literature, migration, mythology, etc)
  • develop students' ability to analyse and respond to written and visual texts of varying difficulty
  • develop students' awareness of local and global communities of Modern Greek speakers
  • develop students' awareness of  and reflection about language and culture diversity locally and globally
  • train students to form broad conceptual understandings of issues relating to cross- and inter-cultural communication
  • provide opportunities for metacognitive training to enhance language acquisition and maximise opportunities to progress in language learning within and beyond the classroom.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the major, students are expected to:

  • be able to communicate at a proficient level of competence in Modern Greek
  • be able to demonstrate broad knowledge of Greek Cultural Studies
  • have developed critical understanding of key cultural aspects of Greek Studies
  • be aware and have gained an understanding of the Greek Diaspora and how it is positioned in the world from linguistic, cultural and political perspectives
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to cross- and inter-cultural communication and be better equipped to interact in a global, yet multilingual and multicultural world
  • have developed understanding and respect for local and global cultural and linguistic diversity
  • have developed an understanding of themselves as languages learners and users.  

Program of study

The following is the program of study for a 36 unit major sequence in Modern Greek within a Bachelor of Arts and should be read in conjunction with the course rule for the BA.

Students complete 27 units of language topics and 9 units of culture topics in either the Intermediate or Beginners stream.
