The Bachelor of Arts requires three years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time); the honours program requires an additional year (or the equivalent part-time). Enrolment in the honours program may be offered to a student who meets certain academic criteria and subject to appropriate resources and staff being available to supervise the program of study.

An Enhanced Program for High Achievers is also available in the Bachelor of Arts. Refer to the link below for the Course Aims, Learning Outcomes and Program of Study for this Program:

Students who wish to exit the award after completion of 36 units or 72 units may be awarded a Diploma of Arts or an Associate Degree of Arts respectively, subject to specific requirements. Refer to the links below for the requirements for these Programs:

Major sequences and individual topics are offered in a range of fields of study drawn from across the University.

Students are required to complete at least one major sequence and one minor sequence for the BA degree. It is possible to arrange a program in order to complete two major sequences.

The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements. 

Course aims

The Flinders Bachelor of Arts aims to enable you to discover, question and understand the grand challenges and big ideas of the 21st Century in local and global contexts while equipping you with the fundamental knowledge and skills that will prepare you for any future you choose. This cutting-edge BA will engage you as agents of change by providing opportunities for you to explore the past and drive the ideas of the future. It will help you make sense of the diversity of the human experience and will give you the transformative skills required in a rapidly changing world of work.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • synthesise knowledge across two or more areas of Arts-based study
  • adapt the knowledge and skills you have acquired across geographical, disciplinary, social and cultural boundaries
  • persuade others using effective communication across a range of contexts
  • determine solutions to problems using critical thinking, creativity and adaptability
  • interpret situations based on ethical values
  • value working both independently and collaboratively
  • apply your employability skills to career pathways across multiple sectors

Program of study

To qualify for the Bachelor of Arts, a student must complete 108 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic.

No more than 45 units of Year 1 level topics and no less than 27 units of Year 3 level topics may be included in the 108 units for the degree.  The 108 units must include:

Core – Year 1 topics

9 units comprising:

 COMS1001  Academic and Professional Communication  (4.5 units)
 PHIL1060  Critical Thinking  (4.5 units)

Core – Year 2 topics

9 units comprising:

 ARTS2001  Digital Transformations  (4.5 units)

Plus one of:

 HIST2077  Crisis and Catastrophe: Past Experiences, Future Prospects  (4.5 units)
 GEOG2030  Sustainable Development in a Global World: Challenges and Prospects  (4.5 units)
 PHIL2164  Humanity in a Global Age  (4.5 units)
 PHIL2165  The Ethical Challenge of Climate Change  (4.5 units)
 SOCI2027  Precarity and Possibility: Creating Social Change for the 21st Century  (4.5 units)

Core – Year 3 topic

4.5 units comprising:

 ARTS3001  BA Futures  (4.5 units)

Plus:

  • one Arts major sequence selected from the list of BA major sequences normally comprising 9 units of Year 1 topics, 9 units of Year 2 topics, 9 units of Year 3 topics and an additional 9 units of Year 2 or 3 topics according to the requirements for the specific major sequence;
  • one Arts minor sequence (different from the major) of 18 units selected from the list of minor sequences according to the requirements for the specific minor sequence;
  • 31.5 units of Electives topics offered within the BA where prerequisites are met

or

  • two Arts major sequences selected from the list of BA major sequences, each normally comprising 9 units of Year 1 topics, 9 units of Year 2 topics, 9 units of Year 3 topics and an additional 9 units of Year 2 or 3 topics according to the requirements for the specific major sequences;
  • 13.5 units of Elective topics offered within the BA where prerequisites are met.

Students will be expected to declare their majors or their major and minor sequence(s) at the completion of 36 units.

University accredited languages, taken through cross-institutional studies, including those offered by the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, are also available as majors in the Flinders Bachelor of Arts.

* Students seeking an accredited program in Psychology should refer to Psychology (Extended major). Students completing the extended major are eligible to apply for an Honours program in Psychology. Students undertaking the extended major should reduce the value of Elective topics by 13.5 units.
