The Bachelor of Arts, Master of Teaching (Secondary) double degree is a pre-service teacher education course which requires five years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). Students who study part-time would normally be expected to complete the double degree program within ten years.

The course is offered by the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work.

Admission requirements

The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements.

Applicants must complete a non-academic capabilities assessment task that is based on the Australian Institute for Teaching and school Leadership Initial Teacher Education standards.

Course aims

The course aims to provide graduates with a sound basis of knowledge in their chosen areas of study in the Bachelor of Arts together with the ability to apply an advanced/specialised body of content and pedagogical knowledge, skills and dispositions to:

  • plan, implement and advocate transformative teaching and learning in the secondary years
  • enact policies and practices that take account of social and individual difference, ensuring that all young people learn in safe, supportive and just environments
  • work independently and collaboratively with young people, colleagues and communities to construct and assess inclusive and intellectually challenging curriculum in the secondary years
  • engage in critical reflection and continuing professional learning through a variety of pathways including research-based projects

Learning outcomes

On completion of the double degree program graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes of the Bachelor of Arts and be able to apply these in an education setting
  • synthesise in-depth, current knowledge and an integrated understanding of the theories, content and processes of learning and teaching in the secondary years
  • articulate advanced knowledge and reflexivity regarding young people’s development and individual and social differences, including for Indigenous Australians
  • apply the cognitive, technical and creative skills and dispositions to create and maintain mutually respectful and socially just learning environments for all young people
  • communicate respectfully with young people, colleagues, parents and communities to enhance professional practice and student learning in secondary schools
  • apply the cognitive, technical and creative skills to construct and assess inclusive and intellectually challenging curriculum in the secondary years
  • demonstrate and apply sound knowledge of research principles and methods to complete a research based project in secondary education
  • commit to ongoing professional learning to do with new discourses, debates and issues in education as they arise in the secondary years
  • demonstrate dispositions towards relational and transformative education and a strong sense of themselves as agents, advocates and leading professionals in the secondary years.

Program of study

To qualify for the double degree of Bachelor of Arts, Master of Teaching (Secondary), a student must:

  • complete 180 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, consisting of 108 units in the Bachelor of Arts and 72 units in the Master of Teaching, according to the program of study below; and
  • meet the required benchmark in the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to commencing the professional experience topics. Students must normally meet the benchmark within two attempts. Further attempts may be recommended by the Dean (Education) under exceptional circumstances.

The double degree focuses on teaching students who are in secondary years. During their secondary years young people develop their plans for post-secondary education and work. As secondary teachers, graduates of this pre-service qualification will play a key role in developing the knowledge, skills and resources that young people need to meet their goals.

This double degree allows pre-service teachers to pursue a teaching specialisation in more depth and deepen their understanding in topics and issues of personal interest. Graduates will be qualified to teach in at least two different school curriculum areas at secondary school level. The school curriculum subjects that are offered are:

English, Drama, Visual Art, Health Education, Information Technology, Science, Biology, Earth Science, Mathematics, Languages other than English, Geography, History, Legal Studies, Psychology and Business Studies.

Except with the permission of the Dean (Education), a student may not proceed to the Master level topics in years four and five unless they have satisfactorily completed the first three years of the double degree.

Students will normally need to have achieved a GPA of 5.00 or higher in the first 108 units to enter the Masters component in the final two years of the double degree. Under exceptional circumstances and subject to specific conditions, the Dean (Education) may permit students who do not meet this GPA requirement to enter the final two years of the double degree. Those not meeting this requirement will transfer to the four-year Bachelor of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Arts double degree.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Arts may transfer to Bachelor of Arts, Master of Teaching (Secondary) if they have achieved a GPA of at least 5.00 after completion of 36 or 72 units of the degree. Under exceptional circumstances and subject to specific conditions, the Dean (Education) may invite other students to transfer.

Students who commence, but subsequently do not wish to complete, the double degree program may be eligible to exit with:

  • a Bachelor of Education Studies or a Bachelor of Arts after completing 108 units, if they have met the course rule requirements for one of those awards; or
  • a Bachelor of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Arts double degree after completing 144 units, if they have met the course rule requirements for that degree.

Except with the permission of the Dean (Education):

  • no compulsory Education topic may be taken more than twice
  • professional experience topics may not be attempted more than once
  • students must complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to commencing the professional experience topics.

Students should note that professional experience topics require full-time commitment for their duration.

The 108 unit Bachelor of Arts component must include:

  • COMS1001 Academic and Professional Communication;
  • 36 units of one Arts major sequence selected from the list below;
  • 27 units of Teaching major, consisting of 9 units of Year 1 topics,  9 units of Year 2 topics and 9 units of Year 2 or Year 3 topics, appropriate for teaching in the secondary years and selected from the relevant and available majors as listed below;
  • 4.5 units of Arts electives which can be selected from any one of the BA majors/minors at any level provided the entry requirements are met; and
  • 36 units of Education topics.
