A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Creative Writing by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), three Year 2 topics (13.5 units) and three Year 3 topics (13.5 units) selected from the topics listed in the program of study below.

A student may complete a minor sequence of 18 units in Creative Writing by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), one Year 2 topic (4.5 units) plus an additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

A minor in Creative Writing is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Education (Primary), Bachelor of Arts from 1 January 2019.

The minor sequence is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Teaching (Primary) from 1 January 2020.

Course aims

The major in Creative Writing aims to:

  • equip students with a thorough grounding in the major content and concerns of literature and writing practice throughout the epochs
  • produce graduates who are able to communicate effectively in a range of mediums, and who are able to analyse critically different texts in a range of situations and contexts
  • provide students with the skills required to assist them in developing and publishing works of creative writing
  • identify the range of fields and professions within the creative writing industry
  • encourage learning and transferable skills in both independent and collaborative contexts
  • encourage students to connect across boundaries and value ethical behaviour through the study of quality literature and the praxis of creative writing
  • provide students with an appreciation of the role of the writer in the working community.

Learning outcomes

On completion students will be able to:

  • generalise their skills across a range of professions
  • formulate high level and effective communications, both orally and in writing
  • defend their understanding of literature and creative writing throughout the epochs
  • critique how the cultural and literary merit of literature and other creative works are, and have been, defined
  • assess the appropriateness of interpretations of literary texts
  • appraise professional pathways for creative writers and understand the role of the writer in the community
