BGL industry projects

College of Business, Government & Law BGL industry projects

Apply the business skills you've learned to real-life projects to gain industry experience and build valuable industry connections.

If you're studying business at Flinders, you can participate in industry projects. These projects involve working in teams as business consultants for local, South Australian businesses. During the semester you will conduct research and develop strategic insights and recommendations for your client, so they can take their business to the next level.

Industry projects are offered all throughout the year in a range of second year, third year and masters topics across management, marketing, entrepreneurship, advanced leadership, and international business.

See below our current selection of topics that involve industry projects.

Semester one

An industry project forms part of the following course topics:

  • BUSN3061A_9125A Industry Project
  • BUSN 3027 Digital Marketing and Analysis

Semester two

An industry project forms part of the following course topics:

  • BUSN3061A_9125A Industry Project
  • BUSN2048 Social Media Marketing
  • BUSN3055 Strategic Management
  • BUSN3037 Import-Export Theory and Practice
  • BUSN9239 International Business in the Asia Pacific Region

Frequently asked questions

How can I get involved in an industry project?

If you enrol in any of the above topics throughout your degree, you will automatically do an industry project as part of the topic assessment.

What time will I need to dedicate to the project?

The time requirements will vary depending on the topic you choose to participate in and the level of involvement with the relevant business.  Typically, you will be involved in:

Client briefing session
This is an opportunity for you to meet with the owner of the business at the start of the semester, learn more about their goals and challenges, and then ask them specific questions to help you define the scope of the project.

Initial student presentations
This is an opportunity for you to present your preliminary research and recommendations to your client and receive valuable feedback and guidance from them to help you improve your work before the final presentations.

Final presentations
This is an opportunity for you to present your final insights and recommendations to your client, and receive feedback and guidance from them which will inform any final adjustments you make to your final consultancy report.

How many students will I be working with on the project?

Up to 30 students may be working with a particular business during the semester. As the industry project takes the format of a group assignment, each student cohort will work in small teams.

What type of businesses get involved in the projects?

Flinders works with several small-medium businesses in the for-profit, not-for-profit and charity space who operate in industries ranging from education, wine and hospitality, construction, manufacturing, retail, finance and professional services.

What aspect of the business will I work on?

Depending on the topic you take, businesses may get you to work in the following areas of their business:

  • Customer analysis
  • Customer acquisition, conversion and retention
  • Competitor analysis of similar businesses, both local and international
  • Conducting external and macro environment analysis of the industry
  • Analysing and evaluating the use of social media platforms
  • Providing recommendation regarding best practices in social media marketing
  • Analysing and evaluating the marketing mix of your business (including product, price, place, promotion.
Do we get to choose which businesses we work with?

No, the businesses are assigned to each topic and corresponding tutorial well in advance.

Is there the opportunity to visit the business premises?

Yes, early in the semester there is the opportunity to arrange small student tours of the business premises, if feasible. This gives you the opportunity to observe their day-to-day business operations and ask any additional questions you have for your client that may assist you with your project.

Are the industry projects offered online?

Yes, providing the relevant industry project topic also has an option to study online.
