Managing Overwhelm – Practical Strategies for Study and Life - Monday 4 May keyboard_arrow_up
  • Monday 4 May | 1pm - 1:50pm
  • Online | Access Teams Link Here

Presented by Doctor Gareth Furber

Hey, I’m Gareth. I’m a psychologist here at Flinders. I spend my days working on BetterU and talking and teaching about mental health.

For Wellbeing Week, I was asked to run a session on overwhelm. I said “sure, I can overwhelm people.”

Turns out they meant something slightly different. They’d prefer I help you manage it. Which, in fairness, makes more sense.

So I’ll be online from 1pm to 2pm on Monday 4th May, talking about how to be productive and well at the same time. I’ve got a few ideas to share, but I’m also really keen to answer your questions.

This is open to everyone. If you’re studying rurally, remotely, fully online, or you’re on campus but not feeling up to coming in that day, you’re very welcome.

Come along, have a listen, ask a question if you like, or just take a bit of time out from your studies in a way that might actually help when you return to them.

We’ll see if we can make some progress on that ever-present paradox of working hard and staying well at the same time.

Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment with an attitude of openness, curiosity, and acceptance. Regular practice can help us better manage stress and anxiety, improve focus, engage more fully in life, and take effective action.

This drop-in online meditation session is an opportunity to pause and offer yourself 15 minutes to get present and grounded. Led by Flinders counsellor Chris O’Grady, these guided sessions invite you to practice increasing your awareness of your experience in the present moment, in a supportive online community.

  • Online | Access Livestream Here

Join expert circadian biologist Prof Sean Cain for a student-centric session workshop on light and mental health!

You’ll learn about the biological mechanisms of light and mood and how light exposure directly influences emotion regulation and depression, why our modern lifestyle may be harming our mental health (especially those days indoors away from natural light and the over-illumination of our spaces at night), differences in light sensitivity, and how misalignment between our biology and environment contributes to mental health risk through the circadian disruption-depression connection.

Plus you'll get practical applications on how you might improve your own mental health with some simple light interventions. Stay for afternoon tea and a chat with our experts! (in-person attendees)
