R U Ok? Day – Thursday 10 September

Tomorrow, Thursday 10 September is R U Ok? Day. The day is a timely reminder to connect with our peers, friends and family and, for those who are able, to support those around us. We can all make a difference in the lives of those who might be struggling by having regular, meaningful conversations.

If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you know, there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re doing or saying - Trust the Signs, Trust your Gut and Ask R U OK?  You can view tips on how to look for the signs someone is not ok, how to ask if someone’s ok and how to keep the conversation going, on the
R U Ok website.

R U Ok? events

On campus at Bedford Park tomorrow Thursday 10 September?
Oasis and the Flinders University Student Association (FUSA) will be hosting an R U Ok? Day event in the Student Hub and Plaza at Bedford Park (11am – 2pm) and the café area at Sturt (11.30 – 1.30pm). Stop by to grab some giveaways, free food, coffee and to enjoy the live music. You’ll also be able to chat to the Flinders’ wellbeing ambassadors – look out for the students in the yellow t-shirts. A panel discussion will be held in the Plaza at Bedford Park at 12pm, where Flinders experts will talk about what R U Ok? Day means to them, how to ask people if they are ok and the range of support available to students. The discussion will be recorded and will be available to watch online later in the day.

For more information about the event, visit the
FUSA Facebook event page.

FPSA mental wellbeing yoga class

Join the Flinders Psychology Students' Association (FPSA) on R U OK? Day for a series of mental health, wellbeing-focused yoga classes that are suitable for all experience levels. All students, staff, and partners are welcome! FPSA are encouraging students to pre-book using the registration link. Walk-ins are encouraged but note that a limited number of mats will be available (BYO mat/towel if possible).

Date: Thursday 10 September | Time: Various sessions from 9am to 2pm | Location: Flinders Humanities Courtyard (
map ref H8) *The price of each class is a ‘pay-what-you-can’ donation to R U OK? The donation box will be located at FPSA's stall or processed through Square. (A donation of any amount is encouraged.)

FPSA Social Discord wellbeing workshop & demonstration

Not on campus on R U Ok Day?

FPSA's events team are holding a session about the science, and demonstration of, mindfulness meditation. The DISCORD session will present you with some background on mindfulness, a short clip, followed by a demonstration. Discussion time is available and encouraged! After, a media clip and test will be offered so you can measure your own mindfulness. The workshop will begin at 11.00am on Thursday 10 September in FPSA Social Discord’s #events voice channel. Join the
Psychology Social Discord server.

Like a Boss - R U Ok? Day

This week’s Like a Boss video is all about how to reach out to others and start the R U Ok? conversation. Join Dr Lauren Butterworth and Flinders’ experts Gareth Furber (e-mental health officer and psychologist), Tammy Coleman-Zweck (Wellbeing Coordinator, Yunggorendi) and Graham Fordham (Student Support Advisor) to learn more about how to ask if someone is okay, how to listen, and the support available at Flinders. Read the blog here or watch the video here.

Support is available

Just a reminder - if you need counselling support, the Flinders counselling service is available between 9am and 5pm weekdays. Have your say how your money is spent

When determining how the Student Services & Amenities Fee (SSAF) should be spent, the University is interested in understanding student priorities. By completing the 2020 SSAF Survey, you will be providing the University with information to help make informed decisions about the best possible allocation of the SSAF to support the needs of the Flinders student community. You will also go into the running to win one of twenty $50 cash cards. Keep an eye out for the link to the 2020 SSAF survey in your student email inbox  later this week!

FUSA nominations are open

Do you want to be a student leader and represent Flinders University students in 2021? Would you like to make a meaningful contribution to University life? Do you want to be involved in student media on campus? Then consider nominating yourself for a position in 2021! You can nominate for a position on FUSA Student Council, Empire Times or as a NUS Delegate. Head to fusa.edu.au/elections for all the details.

Do you have a great idea for a business?

Do you need time management skills to manage your study and workload?

Here are five simple, effective tips:
  1. Prioritise: Determine what you need to achieve and make a list. Be honest with yourself about what is important. Start with the most important and work your way down.
  2.  Schedule (personal timetable): Once you’ve determined what needs to be done, and in what order, set yourself a schedule (personal timetable). Plan out your: study time (when), sleep time, and personal time (remember to include part-time work, travel, exercise and social activities). If it’s looking too tight, be practical and see what you can adjust to make things work.
  3. Avoid distractions: Part of setting priorities and a schedule is setting yourself up to avoid distractions. Be tough. Create a dedicated space for study. Turn off your phone. Tell your roomie/partner/kids that you need the next couple of hours for study.
  4. Take care of yourself: Personal time is a major part of your daily schedule as it important to your mental health which keeps you happy and productive. When you get back into study, you’ll be more relaxed and perform better.
  5. Review and reward: It sounds simple, but it’s important to look back at what you’ve achieved. You have set yourself up to succeed and worked towards that success. Celebrate your successes.
