Take a look on
our blog or watch Lauren here as she explains what motivation is, then breaks some motivation myths before teaching you some motivation hacks.

Reminder - Orientation Survey closes soon

Semester two Orientation has wrapped up and to help us to keep improving, we want to know what you thought.

Take our survey for your chance to win 1 of 4 $50 Mastercard gift cards.

Scholarships for first year domestic students

Is this your first year of tertiary studies? The University has established the Flinders University Student Access Scholarships to assist students in financial hardship.

See here, to discover if you are eligible.

Student feedback invited on review of Assessment Policy

A review of the Assessment Policy has been undertaken with a focus on student success. Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) survey data indicates there is room for improvement in relation to teaching quality and assessment. In 2019 just over 45% of all internal student complaints were assessment related.

The review has been overseen by a Working Group, comprised of University staff and student representatives. The draft new Assessment Policy and supporting procedures and documents are intended to work together as a framework that supports student success in the way it fosters and certifies students’ learning and provides opportunities for you to reflect on and monitor your learning progress.

We now seek feedback on the draft Assessment Policy and supporting documents. Please provide responses to
policyandsecretariat@flinders.edu.au by no later than Friday, 4 September 2020.

Flinders is alive with the sound of music

Ducks aren’t the only thing returning to Flinders this Spring. Live music is back with the Flinders University Spring Concert Series launching on Wednesday 2 September.

The 2020 Spring Concerts debut will feature a mesmerising evening performance featuring our Gamelan Ensemble at the University’s Pendopo at Bedford Park. Kicking off at 7:45pm, the performance will be live streamed and recorded for those unable to attend in person.

Register here to attend and to receive updates on all upcoming Spring Concerts.

Screen-reading in FLO - volunteer wanted!

Are you interested in helping with testing some FLO sites?

The Centre for Innovstion in Learning & Teaching are seeking a student familiar with screen reading software to help with some accessibility testing in FLO. We will need an hour of your time and can reward you with some coffee vouchers.

If you are interested please email
Nicola Parkin.

Congratulations, you have found this week's winning article! Enter the
Uber Eats competition here.

Half yearly permit refund reminder

If you no longer need your Semester 2 student parking permit, you can apply for your $105 refund for the second half of the year (July – December 2020) by Friday 28 August 2020. Requests after this date may not be processed.

If you receive a refund and you need to come to Bedford Park campus at any stage, please remember you still need a valid parking session between 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Permits

If you’re considering purchasing parking, there are many different options available. As we move through this year, a July – December permit may not be your best value option. Depending on your individual timetable and how much time you’re spending on campus, a 30 consecutive day permit or the CellOPark pay as you go option might suit you better.  To choose the option that’s right for you, check out the full range of parking solutions here.

If you have any queries about parking, please contact Parking via
Service One or by calling 8201 2733.

Student Experience Survey reminder - you could win 1000 dollars!

The Student Experience Survey is a national survey which is being conducted for the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment. Your feedback is very important and will contribute directly to the quality of teaching and learning for current and future students.

Students randomly selected to participate in the survey will receive an email invitation with a link to the SES survey. By completing the survey, you have a chance to win $1,000

All responses are confidential and no personal information will be linked to your response.

For further information, including terms and conditions of the prize draw,
see here.

Congratulations to our Uber Eats winners!

Congratulations this week go to Rachael R, Laura B, Skylah A and Lisa M. You have each won an Uber Eats gift card! Keep an eye on your student email this week for further details.

In this competition we asked, if you could have dinner with three famous people (either living or from history), who would you ask?

Thanks, as always, to everyone who entered! Here is a tiny sample of the suggestions we recieved:
  • Queen Elizabeth, Gordon Ramsay and Stephen King
  • Dwayne Johnson, Taika Waititi and Robin Williams
  • Jane Austen, Vincent Van Gogh and Aristotle
  • Jacinda Ardern, Taylor Swift and Matthew Flinders
  • David Attenborough, Jesus and Katherine the Great
  • Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Chris Hemsworth
Some interesting combinations there making for great dinner conversation. The Queen and Princess Diana came up a lot...

Planning to travel home during the Summer holidays (Dec 2020 to Feb 2021)?

If you are, please consider:
  • Australian borders continue to be closed for all international travellers and student visa holders
  • The border closures or restrictions imposed by respective countries might affect your return to and departure from your home country
  • The availability of international flights and the excessive cost
  • Having a discussion about your travel plans with your family back home
  • Arrangements with your landlord on your accommodation while you are away
  • An updated study plan on enrolment for semester 1 2021 and an alternative enrolment plan if you are doing online study offshore (if unable to return to Adelaide)
Please drop in at ISS and talk your travel plans over with an International Student Advisor.

Scams: Be Aware of Scammers

Scams trick you into paying money or giving out your personal details. Be aware that no Australian Government department will ask you for money nor collect any personal information over the phone, SMS or emails.

Phone Scams

Scammers may:
  • Send pre-recorded messages (robocalls) to your phone. These will be delivered when you answer the call or may be left on your voicemail. Technology is sometimes used to project legitimate numbers onto the caller ID on your call log.
  • Attempt to make a conference call with a fake tax professional, law enforcement officer or another official
  • Request payment by iTunes, Google Play, or vouchers, Bitcoin or cryptocurrency. They are difficult to trace
Emails and SMS Scams
Scammers may:
  • Ask you to provide your personal identifying and financial institution details via a return SMS/email or click on a link in an SMS/email, to log on to an online service to receive a refund
  • Ask you to click on a link in a SMS/email to download forms or attachments or create fake social media accounts
  • Request that you pay via cardless cash transfer or via offshore wire transfer (where the scammers are located).
  • Use Recruitment Agencies for services that charge international students high fees if they are successful in gaining the advertised position
You should report it if you receive a scam phone call or SMS. You can report the scam via this online form or phone 1800 008 540.
