A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Disability and Developmental Education by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

Course aims

The aim of the Disability and Developmental Education major is to equip students with specific work-integrated knowledge and skills that can be applied in a range of disability and related human service environments.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the major, graduates should be able to:

  • apply positive disability and human diversity perspectives to professional practise
  • promote the physical and emotional well-being of people with disabilities
  • teach functional skills such as social, self-care, recreational, communication and language, and employment skills
  • utilise advocacy and person-centred planning to facilitate community inclusion of people with disabilities
  • provide case management and counselling support for people with disabilities and their associates
  • apply research, problem solving and evaluation skills to professional practise with people with disabilities and their associates.
