Practical skills and knowledge introduced in VEED2202 CGI Foundations.
Topic description

This topic is a chance for you further your CG 3D skillset. This topic follows on from VEED2202, which was an Introductory Topic to 3D, but can also appeal to students who already have a foundation in 3D or Visual Effects and wish to expand and consolidate their existing skills in Visual Effects projects. We will be introducing some Visual Effects pipelines into your 3D work, including 3D Tracking, Projection mapping and Motion Capture as well as expanding your knowledge of best practice. Software choices will accommodate your own knowledge, although workshops will be taught using a variety of software including, Maya, Nuke, PFTrack, Photoshop, After Effects, Davinci and Houdini. A series of workshops will inform the knowledge for you to implement into your own self-directed, but guided, final projects.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Expose students to advanced concepts used in the 3D Visual Effects industry
  • Develop students’ ability to articulate applied theories and concepts used in the 3D Visual Effects industry
  • Provide the opportunity to diversify their skills in the production of 3D materials, or further specialise in a field of 3D media already commenced
  • Support students to explore their own area of personal or professional interest in 3D media
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a familiarity with advanced concepts of modelling for 3D games, animation and visual effects either collectively or separately, as it applies to industry standards
  2. Demonstrate a working vocabulary relevant to understanding and practising modelling for 3D games, animation and visual effects
  3. Demonstrate a proficient knowledge of a range of modelling for 3D games, animation and visual effects concepts and applications
