Topic description

This topic surveys the major beliefs and practices of several world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese Religions, Judaism and Islam. It also introduces students to the study of religion today, particularly in contemporary Australia.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Become familiar with the beliefs and practices of several major world religions
  • Develop an understanding of the issues facing religions today
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify, analyse, and differentiate the basic beliefs of several religious traditions
  2. Recognise and discuss the significance and experience of 'ordinary' believers
  3. Explore and discuss how religions have interacted, both positively and negatively, in history and the implications of this for pluralistic societies today
