THEO3113 Contemporary Spiritualities

This topic explores contemporary practices of spirituality through an examination of biblical, historical and Christian theological traditions. An in-depth examination of a specified area of contemporary cultural discourse (ecology and the environment, gender, violence) will provide the basis for exploring a range of cultural and contextual practices, with a particular focus on the Australian context, including those of both First and Second peoples.

The topic aims to provide students with an opportunity to examine spiritual practices within contemporary society, including the intersection between spirituality, cultural discourse, and ethical behaviour, while considering the various different practices and ways Christian spirituality is expressed, particularly in relation to First and Second peoples.

1. Compare and evaluate spiritual practices through a critical lens, in light of an area of contemporary cultural discourse
2. Determine how scripture, history, theological doctrines and movements contribute to current experiences of spiritualty
3. Interpret various dialogues between different expressions of Christian spirituality within the Australian context, including those of First and Second peoples
4. Discuss the intersection between spirituality, cultural discourse and ethical behaviour
