Topic description
This topic will introduce students to the principles of comprehensive research within STEM disciplines. The effective planning and communication of research practices will be the core of this topic. Students will develop skills to assist in the successful planning and completion of a research project, including the management of time, resources and supervisor meetings. The topic will discuss material covering research practices, planning, evaluating research publications, and presentation strategies for researchers.
Educational aims
This topic is intended to provide knowledge and skills required by researchers within STEM disciplines. This topic aims to provide students with:

  1. The ability to plan a research project
  2. Skills to formulate a research question/hypothesis/plan
  3. An understanding of the process of developing a research project proposal
  4. Strategies to select, evaluate, synthesise and discuss relevant literature
  5. An understanding of the ethical considerations for research
  6. Guidance on effective presentation of research information to a professional or academic audience.
