Topic description

The emphasis of Speech Pathology Practicum 1 is on the practical application of the theory gained in the Professional Studies & Communication Sciences and Clinical Skills & Practice topics during years one and two of the program. This unit will introduce students to the basics of speech pathology management, through supervised practical experience with clients who have communication difficulties.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Facilitate students' ability to apply the theory gained in the Professional Studies & Communication Sciences and Clinical Skills & Practice topics during years one and two of the program in a practical setting
  • Introduce students to the basics of speech pathology management, through supervised practical experience with clients who have communication difficulties
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate progression from novice to intermediate level competence in the integration and application of knowledge and skills in the Generic professional competencies of Reasoning, Communication, Lifelong Learning and Professionalism
  2. Demonstrate progression from novice to intermediate level in the occupational competencies of: Assessment; Analysis and Interpretation; Planning of Speech Pathology Intervention; Speech Pathology Intervention; Planning, Maintaining and Delivering Speech Pathology Services; Professional, Group and Community Education and Professional Development
  3. Implement evidence-based practice by relating theory to practice while providing services to clients with communication and/or swallowing difficulties under the guidance and supervision of a placement educator
  4. Contribute to routine or familiar aspects of speech pathology services and client management under the guidance and supervision of a placement educator
