Topic description
This topic is designed to strengthen and extend students' proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing that they have acquired over the course of the major. Classes will cover advanced features of the Spanish language, particularly syntax and stylistics, appropriate to this level. The topic will also extend students' knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world through the use of a range of written texts and audio-visual materials.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • consolidate and expand students' knowledge of advanced Spanish grammar, particularly syntax, styles and registers, both in speech and writing

  • develop students' ability to analyse the Spanish language

  • enable students to express ideas and opinions on current issues and events and in response to written and spoken cultural texts

  • enhance learners' communicative competence and collaborative learning skills, through participation in activities involving exposure to a variety of authentic materials and group or pair interaction
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • interpret extended speech in Spanish following complex lines of argument

  • participate in conversations with fluency and spontaneity

  • read, interpret, paraphrase and summarise articles, reports and, in general, argumentative texts concerned with contemporary issues

  • produce texts that contain clear descriptions on a range of subjects related to their field of interest
