Topic description

This topic introduces students to the conceptual, aesthetic, technical and administrative elements of short drama. Students will collaborate with their peers by undertaking crew roles and responsibilities to produce a short narrative drama of five minutes duration.

Workshops and case studies will focus on conceptual development and skill acquisition in areas including producing, directing, cinematography, production design, sound recording, sound design and editing.

Students will pitch, market and exhibit their short drama projects.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to narrative, structure, aesthetics and character in the production of short drama
  • Introduce students to crew roles within the context of short drama production
  • Enable students to pitch their ideas and scripts to their peers
  • Enable students to work collaboratively to develop a short drama production
  • Enable students to further develop production skills in camera and lighting, production design, sound recording, editing and sound design
  • Introduce students to the process of breaking down scripts for the design, technical, organisational and financial requirements for short drama production
  • Enable students the opportunity to experience the linkage of pre-production, production and post-production
  • Enable students to further develop the skills in risk assessing and generating paperwork for a screen production project
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  5. Demonstrate sound knowledge of production skills in camera and lighting, production design, sound recording, editing and sound design
  6. Identify and enact aesthetic, technical, organisational and financial requirements for short drama production through the process of breaking down a script
  7. Understand and describe the linkage of pre-production, production and post production
  8. Risk assess, generate paperwork and gain permissions for a screen production project
