Experience as a Medical Officer in a remote Primary Health Care Clinic

Successful completion of a Recognised Emergency Medicine Course while completing REMH8004 or REMH8005 or within the two years prior to enrolling in these topics.

Assignments; Tutorial Participation

This topic builds on REMH8004 to provide foundational knowledge and skills for the transition to medical practice in the unique environmental and cultural context of remote and Indigenous settings. This topic includes management of complex multimorbidity and includes an elective element where students may choose mental health, dementia care, disability or palliative chronic disease care, to allow more in-depth study of an area of interest. A clinical practicum within a remote Primary Health Care clinic is included in this topic to facilitate application of theory to practice.

This aim of this topic is to incorporate a public health framework to develop the clinical skills and knowledge competencies for medical practitioners managing complex chronic disease and comorbidities in remote and rural areas.

On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

Outline the unique characteristics of rural, remote and Indigenous Allied Health practice
Identify the competencies for effective rural and remote Allied Health practice
Describe different models of remote Indigenous Allied Health practice and use these to critique and modify where possible your own service to support rural and remote and Indigenous residents
Incorporate strategies into own practice consistent with principles of cultural safety and Primary Health Care
Identify and apply the key components in planning a visit to a remote community including 'codes of conduct' or 'protocols'
Implement strategies to ensure continuity of care and service provision
Identify your professional learning needs and develop a plan to meet them, including strengthening your existing support networks
Articulate clinical reasoning and reflexivity which underlies decision making for competent, confident practice.
