Topic description
In special circumstances, and with the explicit prior approval of the Head of the School of Social and Policy Studies, a student enrolled in the honours program in Politics, International Relations or Public Policy may undertake studies and/or research on an approved topic or within an approved subfield of study under the supervision of a member of the academic staff.

The equivalent of approximately 6,000 words of written work, on a subject or subjects approved by the supervisor, will need to be submitted for assessment at honours level.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  • provide an opportunity for honours level students to engage in supervised academic and professional analysis of issues and problems within the fields of political and international studies
  • inform students about the state of the academic literature and political practice with respect to a select range of issues
  • encourage advanced-level verbal discussion and academic argument
  • further developed students' skills in academic research, bibliographic analysis and professional writing

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • engage in advanced-level academic and professional analysis of issues and problems within the fields of political and international studies
  • be informed about the state of the academic literature and political practice with respect to a select range of issues
  • demonstrate research skills in an area of academic study which they have a interest
  • apply effective and independent study skills
  • apply developed skills in academic research, bibliographic analysis and professional writing
