Topic description

This topic will develop core knowledge of the biochemical and physiological roles and functions of nutrients in the human body. Nutrients will be grouped and studied according to function, with focus on the general principles and common patterns between them. Primary food sources of the macro and micronutrients will be explored, as well as the biological effects of nutrient excesses and deficiencies.

Educational aims

This topic aims to extend the student's ability to apply knowledge of the biochemical and physiological science of nutrients to nutrition and dietetic practice, and to refine core skills in critical evaluation of nutrition information.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a mastery of the theoretical knowledge of the biochemical and physiological science of nutrients, and its application to nutrition and dietetic practice
  2. Demonstrate an advanced ability to apply nutritional science to selected disorders related to nutrient imbalances
  3. Investigate, analyse & synthesise complex nutritional biochemical information and its relationship to human health and disease
  4. Demonstrate effective communication skills to disseminate information about nutritional science to specialist and non-specialist audiences
