Topic description
The syllabus will not be set rigorously. A subset of the following issues will be covered.

Mathematical modelling of real problems, forward and inverse problems, ODE problem, PDE problems, discrete problems, optimisation methods, numerical solutions, stability and robustness of solutions, software implementation of solutions, interpretation of numerical and analytical investigations.

Actual current and recent problems from industry will be used to motivate and demonstrate the methods covered. Examples will be chosen according to the expertise and experience of the person or persons teaching the topic.
Educational aims
The aim is to provide the student with insight and experience in addressing industrial problems from conception to solution. This includes identifying a proper mathematical setting of the problem, choosing a strategy for solution, implementing analytical and numerical aspects of solutions and interpreting results.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, the students are expected to be able to:

  1. Formulate a problem in a mathematics setting
  2. Recognise an appropriate strategy for solving complex problems
  3. Select and implement numerical solutions
  4. Interpret and explain results of mathematical investigations
