Topic description

This topic provides students with an enhanced understanding of how different legal practice organisations are regulated. Students will explore, from a regulatory and commercial standpoint, different modes of practice and the impact of innovations and technology on the legal services sector. This topic also covers foundational aspects of legal practice management including risk management, workflow and supervision, and covers specific professional responsibility obligations relevant to these issues.

This topic aims to:

  • Enrich students' understanding of a range of different legal practice settings
  • Enhance students understanding of how the legal services sector is regulated and managed
  • Foster students' development of the skills associated with effective legal practice management and other important interpersonal aspects of being a lawyer
  • Provide students with the capability to develop the business acumen needed to thrive as a legal professional
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Appraise the varied and changing legal practice environment from a business and commercial standpoint including the financial demands associated with different legal practice settings
  2. Discuss the skills needed to survive and thrive within changing and demanding legal practice environments and as part of a business while exercising professional judgment
  3. Critique complex legal issues through legal reasoning and research to generate appropriate jurisprudential and practical responses to legal issues in the context of working within the legal profession and as part of a business
  4. Combine sophisticated cognitive and creative skills with critical analysis when approaching legal issues and make reasoned and appropriate choices amongst alternatives in the context of working within the legal profession and as part of a business
  5. Discuss legal issues in effective, appropriate, and persuasive ways for legal and non-legal audiences using various communication methods in the context of working within the legal profession and as part of a business while working both collaboratively and with a high level of autonomy, accountability and professionalism
