Topic description
This topic provides opportunities to extend and integrate areas of knowledge, and apply this knowledge to authentic client scenarios and problems across both contentious and non-contentious legal work. This topic also provides a forum to further build and enhance transitional skills and attributes necessary for legal practice and related work.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with:

  1. An exposure to authentic and complex client scenarios and problems, and the skills to respond appropriately and professionally
  2. An enhanced ability to identify and research legal issues, and interpret statutes, in the context of authentic and complicated client scenarios
  3. Extended knowledge about the process of giving legal advice and enhanced skills related to that process
  4. Extended knowledge about the nature of transactional practice, and the professional skills to draft documents associated with this type of legal work
  5. Extended knowledge about the nature of litigation, and the professional skills to draft documents associated with this type of legal work.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to complete the follow legal practice tasks under appropriate supervision:

  1. Analyse authentic client scenarios and identify relevant legal issues in complex contentious and non-contentious matters
  2. Identify and research multiple issues, which require interpreting statutory provisions, in the context of authentic client scenarios, in both contentious and non-contentious matters
  3. Provide clear and defensible written legal advice in response to authentic client issues including generating appropriate strategies and solutions, in both contentious and non-contentious matters
  4. Communicate ideas and concepts effectively, including writing clear and purposeful legal letters in plain English
  5. Draft and review legal documents used in transactional practice
  6. Draft and review legal documents used in litigation.
