Topic description
Legal Research: including types of law reports (printed and electronic, official and unofficial); the tracking of cases; the use of legal databases; primary legislation and delegated legislation; secondary works including dictionaries, encyclopaedias; monographs and scholarly articles.

Legal Writing: applying accepted conventions of English grammar, spelling and usage, observing a style guide, forming a plan, drafting a paper, and executing a final copy; an understanding of plain English and the conventions of legal writing.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with bedrock lawyerly skills in:

  • selecting, locating, using and updating appropriate research resources for legislation, cases and secondary material
  • applying these to solve a problem
  • drafting and writing a legal paper
  • implementing the conventions of legal writing
  • observing the ethics of writing
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
