Topic description

This topic examines ways in which theories and principles of Second Language Acquisition can be put into practice in the classroom, in order to enhance the process of language learning. Some of the issues addressed during the semester include: developing students' oral and written skills in the target language; the role of vocabulary and grammar within the syllabus; classroom management and group interaction; material adaptation and development, including some notions relative to Computer-Assisted Language Learning.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop students' knowledge of principles of theory-informed language teaching practice, through reading, analysis and discussion of relevant texts
  • Provide opportunities for reflection over learners' experiences as language learners and/or teachers, in order to facilitate the development of personal teaching and learning philosophies
  • Develop students' ability to evaluate and adapt teaching materials critically, by relating them to relevant theories and principles
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Illustrate the main theoretical bases related to the teaching and learning of language and communication skills, and organise these concepts into coherent, personal models
  2. Interpret and critique academic texts discussing principles related to second language teaching methodology issues
  3. Compare, contrast and critique language teaching and learning materials, in light of the principles discussed throughout the semester
