Topic description
This topic prepares students to undertake their thesis component in language studies, at either honours or masters level.

Topic selection, methodological approaches, analysis of literature appropriate to the area of investigation, and the identification of any areas of ethical concern will be addressed. It is expected that on completion of this topic students will have an approved research proposal that may be developed as an 18-unit dissertation/research project.
Educational aims
This topic aims to

  • Allow students to identify a viable topic that may be developed into a research project
  • Introduce students to methodological approaches in language studies research, both generally and as applicable to their own area of research
  • Assist students in developing a research question
  • Allow students to reflect on ethical areas when undertaking research in language studies
  • Develop students’ understanding of the breadth and depth of research required to complete an extended research project or thesis
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Describe the specific stages of research and understand how a thesis is articulated
  • Place their own research into an justifiable research framework
  • Critically analyse, and articulate, issues identified in contemporary language studies literature, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrate methods to mitigate against potential ethical risk inherent to their research
  • Develop a coherent proposal for the development of a thesis/research project
