Topic description

This topic is an introductory business law topic for non-lawyers. It introduces students to the basic Common Law of contracts and then moves on to more advanced problems while comparing how different jurisdictions deal with them. The aim of this course is to give students a solid grounding in international business law in order to enable them to research and negotiate international business contracts. It aims to be as practical as possible, with simulated contract negotiations as well as key topics covered such as, the major international sales laws, transport contracts, arbitration, litigation, intellectual property laws, e-commerce laws, foreign direct investment regulations and multinational business structures.

Educational aims

This topic aims to introduce non-lawyers to the laws involved in doing business internationally. It aims to be as practical as possible. This course covers basic contract law and then moves onto more advanced problems. It compares similarities and differences between major international jurisdictions.

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Articulate an advanced introductory understanding of the following elements of International Commercial Law: Basic commercial contract law, litigation and international arbitration, intellectual property laws, different multinational business structures, foreign direct investment laws, e-commerce law, negotiation skills and contract drafting
