This topic is the second year topic in the Beginners stream, and the first year topic in the Advanced stream. Students with little or no previous study of Indonesian should complete INDO1201 and INDO1202 before enrolling in this topic.

Topic description
This topic aim to extend students’ knowledge of basic spoken and written standard Indonesian. Special focus will be on developing extensive reading skills and on further exploring morphological and syntactic patterns in that context. Active student participation is required as this topic also aims to enhance speaking skills through role-plays, small group discussions, practical task-based activities and other fun language activities
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • further develop basic reading skill, using authentic written Indonesian language from newspapers, magazines, poems and short stories

  • extend speaking skills in short discussions based on the themes or related issues familiar to students as covered in the reading texts

  • expose students to wide range of interesting social themes in contemporary Indonesia, to build related vocabulary

    expose students to applied grammar by analysing the reading texts through explanation and exercises involving Indonesian grammar

  • train students to apply the sentence structures and appropriate grammatical points in guided writing exercises

  • enable students to listen to and get the gist of spoken informal Indonesian language through feature movie clips and short audio and audio visual material.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • use Indonesian language confidently

  • use reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies more effectively

  • gain an appropriate understanding of the cultural background of Indonesian society and reflect on their own society

  • develop and analyse more deeply and accurately social issues related to the themes in the reading texts

  • produce a written summary, commentary, review, and/or short report, in Indonesian on a familiar topic read or discussed

  • converse in Indonesian with ease on a personal or basic social level

  • use correctly the grammatical structures covered in the topic
