Topic description

This topic includes the review of health and health promoting concepts and theories and the application of these to planning, organisation and implementation of various practices within a health, community or research setting. The topic includes a 120 hour industry placement where students will work within a health, community or research setting under the supervision of an experienced professional and/or within a multi-disciplinary team. The industry placement provides a Work Integrated Learning experience where students can develop and enhance graduate qualities in preparation for future professional practice. Students are assessed by the industry placement supervisor and the university topic supervisor on their application of work ready skills and understanding of professional and Inter-professional practice within a health, community or research setting. Opportunity is provided through written assessment to reflect on individual and organisational practice.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Work in a health, community or research setting over an extended period of time in order to experience the planning, organisation and implementation of health or community-based practices, or research processes
  • Observe the functioning of health care or community-based organisations and the provision of care to individuals and populations or health research process and application
  • Observe the theory learned through past Health Sciences topics played out in practice
  • Observe and collaborate with a range of health professionals or researchers
  • Develop professional identity and work ready skills
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply theoretical knowledge to the provision of health care and health care programs applied to a range of individuals and population groups
  2. Gain practical experience within a health, community or research setting
  3. Review the functioning of health care organisations and the application of policy in the provision of care to individuals and populations
  4. Develop competency in working professionally with health professionals and consumers
  5. Develop a greater understanding of their own professional identity
  6. Broaden and enhance graduate qualities in preparation for future professional practice
  7. Receive feedback and reflect on their performance in the workplace
