Topic description

Sport is the major content of most middle school and secondary physical education programs. This topic is focussed on learning in, through and about sport via contemporary sport teaching and coaching pedagogical models. This topic allows a student to study two sports in detail from both a practical performance and pedagogical standpoint in an applied setting.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Engage with concepts related to the use of sport and games pedagogy in physical education
  • Learn about the TGfU and Sport Education model-based approaches to sport teaching and learning in physical education
  • Critically analyse three dimensions of sport pedagogy within physical education: teachers and teaching; learners and learning, knowledge and context
  • Focus on the implications of an understanding of a contemporary 'models based approach' to sport curriculum design and enactment for personal learning
  • Engage with sport tactical analysis for the planning of 'on the ball' and 'off the ball' skill teaching and assessment
  • Participate in applied/practical sport experiences
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically analyse sport pedagogy within physical education
  2. Use a tactical analysis tool to identify 'off the ball' and 'on the ball' skills of a sport
  3. Describe a models based approach to the design and enactment of sport curriculum within school settings
  4. Analyse Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) and Sport Education models for sport teaching and learning
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the implications of contemporary sport curriculum design and enactment for personal learning and future professional practice
