Topic description
Current and future demands of the health care system require health professionals to train and work interprofessionally. For interprofessional teaching to be successful, clinical educators and facilitators must have the necessary skills and capacity to undertake this complex role.

This topic is designed to assist the educator to facilitate multi-professional and interprofessional student groups. This topic includes educational theory, knowledge, skills, competencies and the self-awareness required to facilitate interprofessional learning.

At the end of this topic the participant will be able to plan and develop interprofessional learning sessions while considering the challenges that surround this emerging role in our changing health care environment.
Educational aims
To prepare students for teaching and facilitating interprofessional learning in both clinical and academic settings.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an overall understanding of interprofessional education and interprofessional learning

  • Review the pedagogical processes and educational theory which underpin interprofessional education

  • Discuss the considerations required in planning an interprofessional learning session

  • Implement and facilitate an interprofessional learning session

  • Critically self-reflect on the facilitation of the interprofessional learning session

  • Explore and discuss the attributes of an IPL facilitator

  • Reflect on the opportunities and challenges for interprofessional teaching from the classroom to the workplace.
