GEOG9023 Research Design and Management

This topic provides a comprehensive overview of the research process from project design and management to the effective communication of results to different audiences. The topic provides students with a structured opportunity to work towards development of their research project. More specifically, it reviews: the research process; research proposal development; ethical issues; research design and project management; sampling; research methods and data sources; interpreting results; and communicating research results. There is a strong practical component to the topic.

This topic aims to provide students with:

• An overview of research processes
• An opportunity to practice specific research techniques (especially qualitative methods) used in social science
• Instruction on scholarly and professional research communication

2. Prepare a coherent and comprehensive research proposal
4. Reflect critically on ethical issues associated with research
6. Explain the relative strengths and weaknesses of a variety of research methods employed commonly in social science
8. Manage a research project
10. Correctly employ an appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative research strategy to answer a specific l research question
12. Present research findings, orally and in written form, in accordance with scholarly and professional practice
