Topic description

This topic will examine climate adaptation and disaster management from a social scientific perspective. The primary focus of the topic is to explore human adaptation and resilience to climate through our interactions with space, place and environment. Students will develop their understanding of key concepts for examining climate and climate change and how these understandings can be used to respond to this problem in the context of concurrent pressures to society, economy and ecology.

Educational aims

This topic aims to explore key concepts and conceptual frameworks to help students to understand climate change adaptation from a social science perspective. Through this understanding, students will develop their ability to assess common adaptation challenges for society in the face of climate change and to evaluate alternative options for responding to these challenges.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Compare and assess key contrasting ways of understanding and framing the climate change problem
  2. Explain key concepts relating to climate change adaptation
  3. Assess the types of challenges climate variability and other extremes present for community resilience now and in the future
  4. Evaluate how climate change will interact with other sustainable development challenges of the 21st Century
  5. Evaluate different management options to enhance community climate resilience
